I was just wondering would it be better to buy from a breeder, petstore, or to adopt a rat from a shelter?

Shelter rattis have more love IMHO THOUSANDS of rats just htis year have already been sent to shelters to die, not many shelters give them a chance, so, alot of the time, they are put to sleep, DAYS after they arrive..

Did you hear about the guy that had all those rats living in his house? well, we had HUNDREDS of homes lined up for them, almost every rat had somewheres to go, but what did the shelter do? but 99% down, the only ones that made it out, were the ones that were rescued before they knew what to do with them all..They claimed thay dident have the "heart" to put pregonant females to sleep, so they made it, but pretty much every male got killed, and then alot of the females...MANY people were upset...

but then thing it that the shelter was thinking that not enough homes would come for them, many of them were sick, had broken limbs, bit, many "problmes"

But i would recoment HIGHLY you try to save a life insted of buy a rat from a petstore selling them as pets..if they are being sold as feeders, then that IMO is the same as a rescue, nothing will stop the breeders from bringing them in to the stores to be killed, but a few lives saved means alot..

Go to a shelter!

And if your local shelter does not currently have a rat available, leave your name & number with them to let you know when a rat is brought in. As someone already mentioned, sometimes rats are not given much time in the shelter, so chances of walking in a shelter with rats available may be slim But definitely let all the area shelters & rescues know that you're looking, and hopefully they can give you a call when they have something for you. :)

Also look on Petfinder for rodent rescues in your area. You'd be surprised of how many there are! You may have to travel an hour or two, but I think it's well worth it to save a life! That's how I got my current 2 rattie boys. :)

SHELTER!!! If you want a rat get him or her from a shelter! You'll be saving a life, and what could be better than that? :D

Also keep in mind that rats are social animals and do better with a friend. :)

i've bought our rats at petsmart & we've never had any problems. since i've joined a few rattie groups online, i'm finding out that adopting them from rattie rescues are now the best. :)
