does anyone here have a bird rescue or work at one I need some information and advice please.
I would like to know what kind of disenfectant can be used to clean aviaries and quartine rooms. I am starting a rescue and sanctary but still need to do homework first while waiting on paperwork. Any advice good bad indiffrent would be appreaciated very much.
Thank you
Also what about aviary blue prints I want to make sure that the materials i use will not harm the birds. I have a u2, sun, and an orange winge that presently own me. I use a hand held steamer to clean those caged but it won't be big enough for an aviary. Any links as to what kind of natural plants and where i can get them that have NOT been sprayed with insecticides.
Thank you
Jenny

Have you tried e-mailing existing bird rescues yet to ask them your questions? You would probably get the best answers from them, though there is at least one lady on this site (Teri) who works at the Oasis Sanctuary and she could maybe help you. Especially, I would e-mail the Gabriel Foundation (www.thegabrielfoundation.org). As far as a disinfectant, a good one is "Nolvassan", it's used by vets, bird breeders,etc... Maybe there's something even better though. If it's a large outdoor aviary, you shouldn't need to clean it too often. That's terrific that you're going to start a rescue, I know there's many birds out there who will appreciate it! Please keep us up to date on how it goes if you don't mind. Oh...one question for you...what kind of steam cleaner is it that you have?

I think it is a eureka hand held steamer. It works great on the cages when I can't take them outside. Got it at lowes I know wall mart has them also. Just wished it held more water LOL
I use diluted bleach on my bird's cages.. but they're NOT in the room and I rinse them good. I duno what other advice to offer.. If I ever get rich I want to start a bird or animal rescue foundation aswell. Not likely though.

If you check on petfinders they have that section for rescues. You could probably contact one and I bet they could be very helpful espically with requirements for your state. And if their not far, you could go and check one out. Good luck! I think what your doing is great!

i did do a post on pf but not in the rescue part great idea
THANK YOU SO MUCH
KAYE IF YOU DARE TO DREAM IT DO IT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
where this a will somehow there is a way
Perhaps there is a way. But I'm only 17 with no job (STILL..) so it's a long way off :)
I'm starting to seriously think about going to college for animals biology and working in a zoo. I as much as I'd like to be a vet I know I never could because I can't deal with the pressure (I suffer from anxiety and panic attacks) and putting animals to sleep would just be like omg.. ><;

Me too I do the bleach, but would love to use something else thats not harmfull. Read the febreeze. It says its okay near animals. I couldn't believe it when I read it.

I hope to one day start a rescue or at least rescue a few birds and rehabilitate them. You know it would be easiest if you had some drainage system, kinda like a locker room drainage system, then you could get the water hose to all the perches and floors, etc. And perhaps some tile flooring that extends up the wall about 5 inches on all sides so the water wont damage the walls or whatever you chose to use. It might cost a little more but it will be worth it, trust me! Thats what I plan to do when I build a simple aviary for my babies...and my future dream bird (M2). Ahh.. Good luck.

I think it's okay near animals like dogs/cats. I think it'd probably kill a bird. I've been around it when it was used, my neighbor used it. It has a very strong odor (the "fresh scent") and that alone would make me never use it.

no need to use toxic things like bleach or commercial cleaning supplies. i use organic apple cider vinegar and water & a scrubby brush!
a steam cleaner is cumbersome & expensive & unnecessary. and febreze IS toxic to birds- do not use it. in another forum i am on, someone had a bird die from that stuff!!! yuk!
btw, i commend you on your efforts on starting a bird rescue! you rock! there are two rescues in my area:
http://www.mickaboo.org
http://companionparrotconnection.org
i urge all of you to consider rescue birds over birds from a shop or breeder. let's house the one that are already here & in need of a home, rather than encourage more to be bred/born/sold! :)

I have been using the fabreeze  because I read an article where they said they adjusted their product to be pet friendly and safe....I have used it on my curtains and sofa..things like that this past winter trying to get help freshen up the house on yucky days when you are shut up and too cold for opening windows. :( Oh my...if one of my birds would have died because of this I would never forgive myself........

yes, it is safe for dogs and cats, but they "will not guarantee" that it is safe for birds. the generic "safe for pets" lable is misleading and unfair!
