Hi,
I have a 5 1/2 month old cocker puppy. He is very sweet and has shown no sign of aggression. My problem is that he since I got him at 7 weeks has associated having his mouth over skin or clothing as comfort. He never bites down but I have small grandchildren and i don't want anyone to mistake his mouthyness as biting. I have tried since day one to stop him from doing this but he seems to need this comfort when he is tired or overwhelmed. I usually grab the scruff ofg his neck and say not biting to him. He knows what i mean as he then licks me but will again try to get my hand in his mouth.

Any ideas?

You could try putting some butter on the top of your hand and say kisses the pup will start to lick the butter. The key is to praise him and say kisses the moment he start to lick your hand. After that when he starts to bite you just say kisses and he should start to kiss your hand. I have toys Grady is allowed to chew on and give him that if he needs to chew something. I hope this helps.

i had the same problem with Harvey my Dachshund he would always do this but then he started to bite down. there are two things i did.
1) i would spray bitter apple on my hands, you can get it from most pet stores
2) or let him lick but when he starts to bite down have water spray in the other hand and just spray once on his face.
it worked for us harvey no longer mouths hope this will help you.
thanks Emma

Replace your hand in his mouth with a toy, and when he plays with that instead of your hand praise him.
