i think u are confused alittle.

so lets go back to the basics.

Filters are used not only to provide the tank with water movement but they help clean the water alittle. This does not mean that weekly water changes aren't needed, but they help keep fish poo and water quality in check.

Air pumps/stones are used only for adding oxygen in the water. They will not help with filtering the waste or controlling the water parameters. If you add a sponge filter to an air pump than that is a different type of filter.
