Hi please could someone help me, My friend left me to look after her Snake while she is away for a week, she told me she has changed the snakes substrate and fed him so he should be ok til she gets back and all I needed to do was check tanks temperature and change his water. Ive noticed realy tiny white 'bugs' crawling around on the wood chip, the snake looks fine and dont seem bothered by them - Im terrified of snakes so really cannot pick him up or out of the tank - What should I do (Im the only person round here she knows to ask to look after him) I think he is a corn snake (from what she has told me in the past) These bugs are not in the whole tank ( its about a 4ft tank) mainly near and below his water hammock)
Please can anyone advise I dont want her to come back to a deceased animal.

sounds like paracites so i would change the litter aroiund the water area, as it would make sense that the bug would be by water.

corn snakes aren't venimous but can give you a nice bite.

at petstores there should be snake handling grabbers so u cna safely remove the snake and put him in a trash can for a few minutes while you change the bedding.

Id clean the whole tank down and soak it in a 1 part javex 8 part water solution and make sure its rinsed down good. Mites are usually black or red so them being white, i dont know of any harfull bugs that are white but even then you want to have that removed. after that if you have more substrate id bake it in the over and then let it cool before putting it in the cage again. One thing for sure, you WILL have to handle the snake, If it is a corn you should be fine, most corns are pretty friendly, and if they do bite, it doesent hurt. You can put him in a pillowcase while you do this and knot it tight, make sure there are no holes or rips he can get out from.

Id also sterilise the bowls and hides as well in the same solution but remember make sure their rinced well after. since If theres any residue it can be harmfull to the snake.
