Well, my almost 5 month old Sophie (toy poodle) seems to be learning where to potty. . .or is she? She's left at home a all day by herself so she is behind a doggie gate with her crate, toys, food/water and pee pads. She is really good about using the pee pads when we're gone. And when i'm at home i try to take her to potty every hour or so. And she hasn't been having accidents that i know of. so i'm thinking she might be understanding. But then again. . maybe not. i try to let her out in the mornings before i go to work so she can get a little more play time outside her area. But i took my eye off her one second this morning and she peed on the carpet. First time in a couple weeks i think. I know, shame on me. Anyway, that got me to wondering. This weekend (saturday to be exact), i forgot a couple times. . . or just didn't make it outside with her when she needed to go, and she went straight to the pee pads and used them (she was in a different room). Which i much rather her do that than use the floor. But it makes me wonder if she's getting trained or if i'm just quick enough to get her outside when she has to go? Once she learned to use the pee pads (because we're gone all day) i stopped praising her for using them and started taking her outside when i'm at home and i praise her and treat her when she goes outside. Do you think she's starting to come around or is it luck? I mean if you take a dog out enough then he/she won't have to go in the house. . . but what happens if i start taking her out only every 2 hours or so. Well, actually i guess i know. She either Pees on the carpet (as she did this morning) or she goes to her pee pads. Is this a normal process a puppy goes through when learning to potty where he/she needs to? i was hoping one day that she would be able to "hold it" while i am gone to work and i could take up the pee pads all together.
