About a year ago, I got my blue and gold chipped so if he ever got lost or stolen he could be identified as my bird. I really felt this was a great idea, because a band can be removed very easily. Also Taz was abnormally large as a baby, so we were never able to get the band over his foot. I have his band, but he is not wearing it. When he arrived at the pet store, even though he was not enen a week old his feet were already too big. I was just wondering if anyone else has their bird(s) chipped.

I haven't, although thats a great idea! I jsy was talking to a friend and she had her dog's micro chiped. That is really a good idea. How much does this cost? I will look into it.

If I remember correctly, it was 50 dollars plus a fee of 35 dollars to register it.

No, I haven't gotten my birds chipped yet though it's a good idea. I'm not all that worried about any of my birds ever getting stolen, since my 'keets and lovebird aren't worth that much (in money only) and my blue-crowned conure is missing half of his feathers and would be extremely easy to identify...so I doubt anyone would want to steal him! Poor guy. :) If I ever get a larger bird though I will definitely get it microchipped, and I think it's great that you did that for Taz.

I don't like the idea of micro chiping it just doesn't sound right to me I would rather have a sample of my birds blood put on file at my vets for DNA identifation.

I have my pionus banded. Should I get my keet microchipped. I have been debating it. What are the pro's and cons?

A parakeet is far to small to get chipped. The process may break the birds neck.

They are? I thought that they could microchip any bird. Where did you read that?

Where exactly do they chip the bird?

I thought they put the chip in the wing. I definatley don't want to do anything that could kill or hurt my keet. I read in Birdtalk that you could get anybird chipped at leat that's what I thought.

Sounds too risky for any bird.....does anyone agree?

I Agree. I looked it up on the internet. Not reccommended for birds under 100 grams. Plus you must have a machine that reads the right companies micro chip. Doesn't sound as smart as it seems.

I also agree. I would die if something were to happen to my baby's!

I don't think it's too dangerous for most birds, and I talked to this guy at a bird store who chips them and he said it was fairly easy and safe. I didn't ask him a whole lot about it though like I now wish I had!! Well, I don't see a huge advantage in having a bird chipped, especially the ones like budgies and 'tiels because I don't know who would go out of their way to steal them. I think that I read somewhere about a few hyacinths who were stolen and microchipped, but they still haven't been found! Well, I haven't read much about chipping but will look more up about it and ask my vet when I next see her about the pro's and con's and anything else.

Most prefer to put it in the neck, however I asked the vet that I took mine to and she said a parakeet can get it under the wing and it should be alright.

Is that safe though??? Is it alright for them??

It's safe, and the chip is extremely small and they wouldnt' do anything like that if it'd be bad for the birds I don't think (at least I'd hope not!).

Ok. Well I'm still debating but don't think I will get my keet chipped.

I wouldn't think it's necessary. I've had budgies for 8 yrs. and there's never been a single reason that I wish I had had them chipped.

Pumpkin is an indoor bird and her wings are trimmed. All of our windows have screens and nobody is allowed to open a door when the flock is out. So I think she will be fine without one.

Yeah, I take both my blue and gold and my parakeet outside. My parakeet is not chipped, however she rides in my pocket and only comes out every now and then to poop. After that she goes back to my pocket by herself.

My lovebird trained himself not to poop on us. He saw how upset we were everytime he did it. And then he stopped. It's amazing how intuitive they are to our own feelings, isn't it?
