I have an 8 year old male boxer, Max. He is lean by nature, but in the last 2 months he has lost 10 pounds. The vet can't find anything wrong--blood and fecal tests, as well as physical exam. He is not in pain and does have somewhat of an appetite, but has had diarrhea more often than not--also some vomiting which is unusual for him. He is WAY too thin and it kills me to look at him. Has anyone ever had a similar situation? This is breaking my heart. Please help. Thank you.

What are you feeding him? Have you thought about changing food?

Have changed foods several times. Now he is on a dry food that is designed to be easy on the GI tract, and boiled chicken breasts and rice. Before that it was science diet and Bil-Jac for about 4 years. I just talked to the vet again and he said that he is going to treat him for Inflammatory Bowel Disease and if that doesn't work then he would guess that he has intestinal cancer. Please pray for the Inflammatory Bowel Disease.....

My heart goes out to you. How scary to not know what the problem is or what to do.

Yogurt is really good for your dog. I would switch him to a puppy food which is higher in calories/nutrition and much, much easier for him to digest. I would continue the chicken and rice, too. (Try chicken thighs. Sometimes I get them for $.39) It would be best if you stayed with the same brand for now. It's not the time to switch brands of food. He may have diarrea for a while even switching to puppy food.

When he starts to feel better, gradually switch him to a better food such as Innova, Solid Gold or California Natural. They cost more, but you feed them less, so it works out. Plus it's so much better for them to not have all those fillers used by most of the brands. Fewer vet bills and a much healthier dog.

I do wish you the best.

Wishing your boxer the best. Switching foods will cause him an even more upset stomach unless it is a food specifically designed for upset stomach, ask your vet about prescription diet I/D. It works really well for upset stomach. Hope everything clears up please keep us all posted on your baby.

I have heard of a similar situtation but with a cat, so I don't know if it could be the same thing. This cat constantly had diarrhea. she had been to the vet who thought it was worms, treated her and she still was sick. Her owners were really worried because she was so thin, they took her back to the vet and he decided to run test but wanted to try worming one more time. The owners ask if she was being treated for all types of worms, she wasn't! The vet had only treated her for two types when their are actually three. The owners insisted she be treated for the third type and now she is fine, no more diarrhea and gaining wieght. Have you thought about getting a second oppinion?
