Hi! I have an eight year-old dachshund and she hates for me to brush her teeth. I want to know A- How often should I brush her teeth? and B- How could I make it more enjoyable for her?;)

I brush my dog's teeth every other day (we alternate with the dental chews we get from the vet.) I target her when she is most relaxed & I lay her head in my lap & rub on her belly for a bit. When she is completely calm I brush one side at a time, with a break between the top & bottom rows.

I think that if you spend more time introducing her to the toothbrush before you brush her teeth she won't hate it so much. Things like just taking out the toothbrush & touching her mouth with it & then giving her a treat & putting the toothbrush away. Do this on a daily basis & after a week or so you could start trying to brush her teeth instead of just touching her mouth with the toothbrush. Hopefully she'll stop hating it so much!

My dogs love having their teeth brushed. They love the poultry flavored toothpaste. They start salivating when they see what I am preparing to do. The also tolerate the rotating toothbrush that uses batteries. Makes the whole job a breeze.

My dogs love that toothpaste! When I start brushing their teeth they spend the whole time trying to lap up the poultry toothpaste. I do manage to get a few good brushes in while they are distracted by the yummy flavor. I brush their teeth at least once a week.

I never brush, and my vet always comments on how nice my dogs teeth look. I give healthy treats like bullstix, achilles tendons, dried stingray tail, and naturally shed deer antler for my dogs to chew on.

You can also take a cotton rope toy and soak it in chicken broth, then dry it gently on a cookie sheet in your oven. Your dog will chew it and the rope will clean the teeth. My dogs enjoy eating rope toys just for the fun of it.

I'm with Evey...I do the same with Kujo and the vet can't believe how clean his teeth are....He hated having his teeth brushed.

Make sure to get a size of rope that is suitable for your dog. Of course, if your dog is like mine, it won't matter. Make sure to use a natural cotton rope with a tight twist. My dog has been through quite a few of these things. I go for the ones that are more knot than rope, because she is a real chew monster.
