i would consider getting one as a back up for when the power goes out. Last night at 10 pm or so, i had a black out and it lasted for almost 14 hours. I spent about 7 hours water out of my tanks and replaceing the water slowly so i can add oxygen to the water. after the power came on for about 5 mins, black outf # 2 happened. for about 1hr1/2 so again i added some water to the tanks trying to give them more oxygen. sincing how how water burns up oxygen more than cool water, i would suggest getting a battery operated air pump. Def worth the money.

Unfort i did lose a couple of rummy nosed tetras, but i was able to bring one of my 9 year old parrot back from sudden death.

I have made my own automatic battery pump for my aquariums and for my customers, with an automatic pump you do not have to be around to turn on the air. All you need is a relay switch (i got mine from Radio shack). The relay switch is held "open' when 110 V is on and closes when 110 V is off, allow the DC to connect. You can also run battery water pumps or inverters this way.
Here is a picture of the relay I am talking about:
