This subject has probably been done to death but, I am scared. I am the proud owner/daddy of a 2.4lb 9 wk old yorkie. I got "baby/amber"(my girlfriend and I cant agree on a name)on the 23rd and the next day i went to the vet. What happened was that she was up all night coughing and wheezing. I was so scared so I went to the vet and he gave me some antibiotics for her kennel cough. Problem is that I am having the worst time trying to get her to take it.
I have tried putting it in her mouth then blowing in her nose and massaging her throat, didnt work. gave it in her canned food, didnt eat any. Gave her it crushed in her nutri-supplement gel, she only eats about half. Tried it in honey, she only takes half.
Last night i felt that her cough/wheezing got worse. Shes sneezing alot more and i feel like she is gaging for air. I went to the vet this morning again and he recommended robitussin. She hates the robitussin and today she refused all but one does of the antibiotics instead of taking three.
Sorry for the long post but its traumatizing for me to see her cough all night. I need ideas on how i might be able to give her her meds. I also need a little comfort by someone telling me this is not a big deal. Please comment on this thread I love her so much and i need some comfort.

None of my 4 take medicine well lol.
For the golden: hide pill in hamburg, she gulps so fast she has no time to realize there is pill in it
The beagle: chop pill if it's big, hide it in really strong smelling treat. For robitussin, I've used a pet syringe and basically *forced them* and then quickly gave a treat.
Chi and Griffon: chop pill teeney and hide in a smidgeon of cat food. That treat is too tempting for them to refuse.
If worst comes to worst, I open mouth, shove pill all the way back to edge of tongue, THEN blow in nose! Pill falls down throat then!

Sorry lol, forgot the comfort.
Aren't we just mean mommies? But mommy knows best and little dogs must take medicine!
They will all do this to us and we must stand firm!

Im not sure where I write back, Im new here so I hope Im not messing your entry up by writing here. I got a golden retriever pup about 2 months ago and he had a very bad snotty nose and choked alot on mucous. HE had to take three sets of antibiotics to get over it. I put a little peanut butter on bread and put it in the center of it and he loved it. I hated to force it down his throat , and someone told me about the pb bread and it worked! Hope that helps.

Oh and the first antibiotic didnt work, and they switched to a different kind after taking 10 days of the first kind, and that did the trick so you may need to switch to a different antibiotic.

One of my Jack Russells is getting over Kennel Cough right now. The new pup we got brought it in. Just glad none of the others got it. She's taking pills and liquid medicine. The way we get her to eat the medicine is giving her hot dogs, hamburgers, or whatever other meat. I'd say try any kind of non-dog food and see if it helps. Goodluck! :)

If it's pills - that's a piece of cake for a dog! I simply put the pill in a little ball of cheese or liver sausage. They always want more!
A cat however, is much more difficult. I spent $5 at my vets and got a piller for the kitties. This would work for dogs too if they won't take the pill hidden in food.
btw - my vet always gives me a choice of liquid or pills. Take the pills - liquid is too difficult and messy to deal with. (at least for me)
