 I was breeding my cambodian female with a striking purple/red male betta. What I learned was that it would take 2-3 months for the babies to be fully developed. After like 4 months they were still baby fry!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It was really weird did they have like a birth defect or something. Cause I don't that is supposed to happen. Can somebody please tell me what happened or at least guess???????!!!!!!!!!!!!!

the common problem is water quality and tank.

it would be good to know your water parameters(ph,ammonia, nitrates, nitrites, temp)

food and tank size.

i been breeding bettas for over 10 years so i can probably help you.

right now my guess is stunting and poor water qaulity but i can be wrong.

well anyway it sounds like the water is bad, as a 3-4 month old betta should be around .5-1 inch. most bettas are sold at 3 months at around 1.2 inches.

it could also be stunting. depending on how many fry you have and tank size alot of the betta fry could have possibly not have grown due to over population in a given size tank.

when i use to breed bettas alot some of my spawns could produce about 200-300 eggs, so imagine 300 fish in a small tank like a 10 gallon. it wouldn't work so a solution would be using like what i use which are 3 - 55gallon raising tanks.

yea, I agree, it must be water quality, or lack of a good food, food that isnt very nutritional means they have to eat alot of it to grow a little, what are you feeding them?

How big is the breeding tank, have any died? how many fry are left? and I'm sure they must have grown, my betta fry just hatched out today, and should double in size in a few weeks, so I'm sure your must have grown a bit..do you have a camera? try and get pics of the tank and fry :)

Betta Growth chart (http://www.waynesthisandthat.com/bettagrowth.html)

Try and see if your fry are at the size they are suppost to with the growth chrt, find out how behind they are, the pics are life size :)

Well all the fry died. I feed them brine shrimp or something like that. The breeding tank is 10 gallons. I think it might have been water quality.

And they were behind alot. They were at the 1 day old mark at 4 months.

thats a problem using a ten gallon, as alot of waste from the fry build up fast in tank small of a tank. it is a good idea a few weeks after they are free swimming i would put them into a larger grow out tank.

with brine shrimp, i think u mean bbs or baby brine shrimp. free swmming young bettas can't eat adult brine shrimp so i believe u read that u were to use baby brine shrimp.

an important factor to remember is that brine shrimps are salt water animals so it is important to wash them out fully before feeding them to the baby bettas.
