Actually it all depends on the Species of Hermit Crab you have.. sicne each one has their own preference.

Purple Pinchers love Turbo shells, Japenese Snail Shells, Babylonia Shells (round opening shape)

Ruggies and E's love Whales eyes, Shark eyes shells (D opening shape)

The way to judge on what shell size is to look at the crabs big pincher and measure it up to the opening of the shell.. not the size of the overall shells but the opening is what we need to look at. It must be smooth and the big pincher must be able to sort of fit in sideways to block the enterance.

Shells must be clean, without cracks or holes. When you get them home make sure to boil them in de-chlorinated water at a rolling boil for 5 minutes to 10 minutes.. allow to cool, mist the insides and place them into the tank opening side up. They like the insides moist to allow them to slip in.

Now you need at very least 3 shells per crab... we have about 4-5 per crab.. but also have back ups so you can rotate them out often.. because they must be kept clean and interesting for the crabs.
