Thinking about getting another small bird

I think it would be fun to get a little friend for Hamlit the only prob is I don't know if Hammie would take to another bird he has not even seen another reall bird since I brought him home from the pet store almost two years ago.

in most books that i've read, they have advised in not trying to bring new birds into the flock esp. if the flock only consists of one bird. they say that there will most likely be fights over territory and YOU! not that this has stopped me any in the past;) I have never bought an additional bird that has not gotten along with the rest. i think that as long as they both recieve TLC from you and that Hamlit doesn't recieve less, they should be fine....however, if you do get him a llittle friend, make sure you are prepared to separate them if neccessary. good luck

Yes I agree with jackie. That can be awful with the fighting that can go on. I had 2 before the one's I have now. They were boy and girl They lived 15 years. Budgies,they used to fight like cat and dog and they were used to being together,I had to stop it right away. They would draw blood on one another and peck each others head. I have no clue why? Then minutes later, prean each other......They were funny. When minnie died Mr Magoo died from broken heart....Sad!

That is funny and sad:( were they in the same cage? I never want to put two birds in the same cage they would just share a climbing tree for 2 or 3 hours a day.
if I do decide to get another bird I still have to talk my dad into letting me get one:rolleyes:

:) yes they had been together for 15 years. I felt very sad for them I adpoted them, this women that had them left them in a room all alone. So I took them. I was in the hospital when they died. My kids had to tell e. I cryed for a month....I didn't get another till my son brought one home for me in a box.....The store since closed they were very bad with their animals. Pretty has no band.

Hamlit doesn't have a band and has never had one.

I read somewhere that if your bird doesn't have a band,then they were from an animal farm,you know those bad ones? Well pretty girl can be really mean. LOL But she is just so beautiful....They say the beautiful one's are mean LOL.:D

I don't agree with that! All my birds are verrrry pretty, and verrrry nice! :) Courtney, I would think getting another budgie would be fine, although do you think Hamlit would really need/want one? If he's content with you and happy, I see no reason to get another really. When I've introduced my 2nd and 3rd budgies to the first one, they fought for about five minutes (nothing major) and after that have gotten along fabulously. If you got another bird, I'd buy the cage and have it set up in the same room for a few days before bringing the bird home. From my experience, most budgies get along fine together unlike maybe bringing a cockatoo home after already having one! In the wild theyr'e used to being very close to hundreds of others, so maybe that's why they seem to get along well. One last thing, female budgies are known to be more aggressive, and when I first brought home a male after having a female, she would drive him away from the food dish. Quickly I got two and now it's no problem at all, but two males would probably be the best idea.

I think I'm going to get a bourke parakeet if I end up getting a friend for Hammie they are vary cool birds and sweet too.
