We just got a 7 week old female Pekingese and we want to train her to do her thing on a newspaper, what is the best way of doing this? Should we try the bottle that has the drops that you put on on paper or the sheets that are made to attract a puppy to it or is there a better way of house breaking them?

I have found with my Toys:

They have small bladders!

1. Immediately after pup "wakes up"...take him OUTSIDE.

Personally, I like to use a "leash and collar" when doing this, but your "call" on that one! Have "patience" when outside with him..and yes, YOU go outside with him on each of the "potty" calls! Walk aroundand letting him "sniff"..preferably take him to the "spot" or area he has "eliminated in" in the past!

Use words like "go potty"...and when he does..MAKE a big deal over it...Let him know HE did a GREAT thing by going in that spot! Then, follow up with lots of "GOOD boy/girl!!!! in a very excited voice. Do this EVERYTIME he wets or poops outside!! Then..even if you use his "kibble"..give him a food reward; along with lots of hugs and kisses.

2. After puppy drinks water...take him outside.

3. After he "eats"...take him outside.

4. After he has "played" in the house...take him outdoors

immediately...when they get excited over playtime.

5. And do the "last call" for the night; before YOU go to

bed.

Finally, remember he is still a baby...and has NO control over the bladder. It is UP to you to watch him with a "hawk eye" and if you see him "sniffing"...get him OUTSIDE immediately; and avoid the inside "accident".

IF you cannot watch with a hawk eye, and are busy doing something; then "confine" in a small gated off area; and do not give him the opportunity to "wet or poop" in the house!

If you are consistent with the "schedule" needed for a young puppy; he should definitely...catch on that "potty times" are OUTSIDE.

Remember...right now...puppy needs to be let outside often; and as he gets older...he will be able to "hold" it longer!

This was taken from my grooming site, under houstraining. If you want to use papers or a pad, insert that word for *outside*

Definately DON"T depend on the drops to do the elbow work for you, it's an added attraction, but with the more watchful and regular you are with things, the easier it will go!

As a rule, puppies can only hold their "water" for as many hours as they are months old, plus one. (around the clock) If a puppy is 2 months old, then he can go 3 hours. Remember this and the fact they go after sleeping, playing, and eating and you should do fine. Just be consistent. If you are going to let the dog go on papers in the house forever, that's fine. But if you want to train him to go outside, eventually, it is easier and less confusing to the baby to teach him to go outside from the beginning. That way, he doesn't have to unlearn a behavior he worked so hard to get in the first place.

we plan on letting the dog go on papers forever, we do everything above but as soon as we put her on the pad she just sits or lays down then we she gets up and goes off of the pad she then does her thing and we catch her before she does it again we take her back the pad and she does the same thing sits or lays forever and then gets up goes off of the pad and does her thing, is there something here that we are doing wrong or does it just take alot of time for this system to work

try enclosing her in a room then cover it with newspapers. that way, she'll have no choice but to do it on the papers. after she's good with that you can try removing some of the papers until only an adequate amount is left. remember to leave some time in between removing the papers.

The puppy is going 50% of the time right now on the pads and that is only when we place her on the pads. She has started yelping during the early morning hours usually around 1:00 am and then again around 4:00am, we do not allow her to drink or eat past 7:00-8:00pm and we goto bed around 10:00-11:00pm and we make sure she does her potty before we goto bed should we continue to ignore the early morning yelps or go and get her out? we are usually out of bed at 6:00am.

I guess the way to look at it is if you have to go (bad) how long can you hold it? lol

Also, if it's for real and no one responds, how will she ever know that asking gets results?

After a couple times you will know if she's playing games, then ignore!

We are at 90% right now with her going on the pad but she will not poop on the pee pads what can we do to make her go there? we tried placing the poop on the pad for 30-45 minutes when she does do it but she still is not taking the hint...

Hi I'm responding to your inquire about house breaking your puppy. The best way that has worked for me has been by going to your local pet store and purchasing a small pen and putting it around the area where you have the newspaper and the areas that the puppy potties outside of the pen, whatever you use to wipe up the mess with like a paper towel for the urine place it in the pen on the newspaper, also pick up a small piece of stool and put it on the paper and everytime you catch her/him getting ready to potty say no in a stern voice and rush it to the pen and always say go potty in here and when you catch her/him pottying in the pen reward the puppy with a very small treat and appraising it with lots of love and excitement in your voice, (more so than the treat) you have to be consistent with this method. And when your not home have a large enough kennel to put a blanket in and toys and have the opening of your pen attached to the sides of the kennel so the puppy can't get out and won't have run of the house and go potty anywhere and it will learn that the kennel is its little play house and sleeping area and the newspaper area is its potty area, if you would like to learn the outside potty training area I can help with that and its a little different than paper training. I was just reading another thread and a person said to only give water to a puppy when she eats? is this true? we give her water through out the day but when she eats her last meal of the evening we put the water up until morning time when we get up, is this the correct way or should we only give her water when she eats?

Dear rndthm,

The best suggestion I have is to put a small pen thats either 4, 6 or 9 feet around and about 2 or 3 feet high, around the potty pads or newspaper that she cannot get out of with the opening of a kennel facing the pen and the opening of the pen attached to the outer sides of the kennel, so she can enter and exit the kennel and not be able to go anywhere else in the house at all, but and make sure you put like a babies blanket in the kennel and some toys to make her like its her own personal little house with a yard. Do not take her out unless your going to just hold her and love her and don't let her down when you want to play with her and let her run around the house, the best thing to do when you want to play with her by letting her on the floor is to get in the pen with her and play that way. Feed and water her in the mornings in the pen and block it to where she can't get in the kennel and do not let her out at all and she will go potty in there, then appraise her and open the kennel back up so she can go back in there after she potties. Do not let her out until you see her start going potty in there and keep it changed and clean, after she falls into that pattern and going potty in the area for about 1 week gradually start taking her out for very short periods. Also don't let her around the other areas in the house she has gone potty at because she will keep going back to those places and going potty. My friend is doing the same thing and she's had her little puppy in the confined area set up like I said and after feeding him he went pee 1/2 hour after he ate and drank, then he was barking and yelping like crazy wanting out for about an hour and a half then went poop, she is going to give him another week or two before she starts letting him out.

We have her to the point that she pees and poops on the pee pad at all times now but my question is do we let her drink water all day long or only when we feed her in the morning and evening time???
