In my opinion, i would choose a rat! They are much more social, and lovable. But do waht you want, and make sure you know what ur doing.

hey well if the mouse is a male you can keep it alone but if its a female you will have to get her a friend because female mice do not do well by themselves they need to be in pairs and they are not that expensive and as for the color issue thats for you to decide the albino ones are usualy used to feed snakes and other reptiles so if you want to save one of them from ending up like that good for you and also if you get a rat its always better to have a pair then just one by itself

comming from both sides;)

i have 5 female mice and 2 female rats. the mice are nice but more so like to be with eachother, theres Molly who is the mother, Misty who is Molly's sister, Mandy, Cuddles, Precious, and Angel, who are Mollys daughters (all her buys went to a petstore) but i have been bitten enough by them to not want to handle them all the time, also they smell a whole lot worse..

now, my 2 girls are my babys, i love them to death, full of kisses, only real bad thing to sday about them is they are trouble makers. Turnip is very sweet and loves to be around me and my dog, while Trouble is also very loving but she loves to go on adventures which usualy leave me scaired to death..but a large cage is needed, and lots of water and cleanlyness :)

Their short life span is one of the biggest drawbacks of mice. On average they live for about 1.5-2 years, although they can sometimes live up to 3 years. if you have children around your going to have to explain death to them.

I have owned mice before and never owned rats but have had a lot of experience with them. I think both are equally sweet and friendly. I think whether you get mice or rats you should get two of the same sex, males can get along with each other just fine as do females. Mice live about 2-3 years and rats can live 3-4 years. Rats need a much bigger cage than mice, both need a diet other than your commercial feeds. I think mice and rats smell about the same, which isn't too bad as long as you keep the cage clean. Males do smell worse than females though. Both make excellent pets and I've never been bitten by the mice I had nor the rats I've been around. My female mice even used to lick me all the time, since I've never owned rats I'm not sure if they do that. I think its cute. I think the main things to consider is how big of a cage can you afford (or make) and the fact rats may live a bit longer than mice. Both can be prone to tumors (I've actually seen it more in rats though especially hairless). Just make sure you have a good diet, toys, a big enough cage and its a good idea to get a same sex pair whether you get rats or mice.

I would get a mouse. And they usually live around 1.5 to 3 years. If you get a female, it would be best to get at least one more, because mice are very social. But if it is a male, get only one, because two males housed together are very likely to fight, but not always. Also, make sure that in the cage there are plenty of places for it to play and hide. Feed regular mouse food, or make your own from grain cereals. Also, feed it fresh fruit and vegetables every day, but only in small amounts. I wish you luck. Oh, If forgot. The cage you are going to use: if it is a wire cage, make sure the space between the bars is very small or the mouse will squeeze out. I prefer an aquarium, because of added security, and they are much easier to clean. It's personal preference, though.
