Wow...I just have to say that some people actually LIKE roping. In one of our classes at school (taught by a guy that I really dont' like and who is a big rodeo fan), he's teaching us to rope calves. We practice on a fake wooden calf but he actually thinks we enjoy this stuff, and I don't even like roping. It's stupid and pointless, and I'm sure the calves don't enjoy getting a heavy rope tied around their legs.

No I'm sure they don't. the legs tied are the easy part for the calves. It's the first part the roping around the neck! I don't know how it don't break there necks. If you ever watch the calve roping on tv you never see the calf after the cowboy ropes it. Theres a reason for that. In case you don't know. It's a timed event. The calf goes first then the rider on horseback throws his rope around the cafe's head and the horse stops the rope is then tied to the saddle horn on the saddle. The poor calf if jerked so hard they sometimes do a back flip. The rider then must jump off his horse & tie 3 of his legs then throw up his hands, get bsck on his horse & the calf must stay tied for a few seconds. Sometimes the horse will start to back up dragging the calf.

Yep the calf roping & steer wrestling are by far the worst 2 events in rodeo.
I like how it's done for high school girls. Forgot the name but it's done close to the same way, but once they rope the calf the horse stops and the rider lets the rope go. to end the time. Guess thats not macho enough for those big bad cowboys.

Why are they teaching that in school? Just refuse to take the class or participate!!!!

Well someone asked that to Mr. Williams (that's what we'll call him, but that's not his real name). Now he is usually a testy person, and when someone said "Why are we learning this?" he said, "Well you don't have to learn it! How about for every day that you don't participate, you get detention?"

Hmm...not a very good answer if you ask me;)

He tells us about the time he spends roping, and we even got the "pleasure" of hearing how one of his horses broke a calf's leg. He says he feels sorry for the calf but I think he would give up roping if that were actually true. SOME PEOPLE:mad:

That's ridiculous. I'd go to the principal. Heck, I'd get a group of your friends in that class together to take the detentions every day and see how long he'd last with that. Hrmph.

By the way, I like your website, Fuzzy. :)

No way, you have the right to refuse and he must offer you an alternate assignment. It is a law in most states, and the teacher cannot punish you for not wanting to participate in something the promotes animal cruelty.

When I was in high school I had an anatomy teacher threaten to ruin my perfect A because I refused to dissect a fetal pig. Hell, I refused to dissect anything!

i went to the dean and she had to give me an alternate assignment, which was basically learning from the book instead of dissecting some poor baby pig that didn't even get the chance to be born. I kept my A.

If you think it's wrong, fight for what you believe in! That's what America is all about!

He even joked around one time asking me to come out to his house and help him rope his calves, and I said, "No, I would feel bad for the calves and I wouldn't do that."

He said, "Aww, my goal isn't to harm my calves, I don't want that to happen." Well it does, so why does he rope them?

Even if he was kidding, it was entirely inappropriate for him to offer for you to come to his house. Sounds like the dude is a jerk.
