Hello fellow pet lovers :D ,

I have a parakeet named Sparky. I'm not sure how old he is because I bought him from a pet-store, but I know I've owned him for two years. I was eating dinner tonight when my family and I noticed that he looked like he was panting (ex. moving his wings up and down, chest moving in and out faster than normal breathing, eyes closed, head up, chest out, bottom area kinda popping outish). We sat there to see if he would calm down but all he did was occasionally move around in his cage, tweet, eat, and go back to his pirching stick.
I'm not sure if anything is wrong with him, just wanna be on the safe side. I once heard that female, aswell as male, birds can lay eggs in the spring time wether they are fertile or not. Is this true? Could my bird be laying an egg or something wrong with him?

Sorry it was long and thanks for your help,

Hi equine. It sounds like maybe he got overheated. If you notice him holding his wing out and panting that is a typical overheat sign. Get him to a cool place (fan an A/C)quickly and mist him with cool water. Make drinking water ready and keep him calm. Birds have a little higher internal temp but have low tolerance extream heat. Also sounds a little like a mating dance/stance. I am not an expert and always encourage going to the vet to make sure bird is okay. They hide their illnesses very well. It is instinctive as in the wild they will be ousted from the flock or even killed if they are sickly. Male parakeets do not lay eggs, only the females and the females can lay unfertilized eggs. There does not need to be a male present.

Good luck with Sparkey and keep a close eye on him.

I was thinking along those lines too Pepsidoodle....it sounds to me like Sparky wants a girlfriend. I would have him checked anyway just to be safe because you don't really know until an expert has evaluated him. Good Luck!

My male parakeet laid an egg!!! I have had Mr. Blue for 5 years, when I bought him, the pet store owner said he was a male and he had a blue cere. My female parakeet lays eggs all the time. But suddenly MR. Blue started doing the egg laying dance and laid an egg yesterday. I don't know what's wrong or what happened...he was a male when I bought him 5 years ago. Any advise...
