Hello there, I have a wonderful female pekingese who I would like to breed. She is 15 months old and will be going into her 3rd heat in a few months. I don't want a lecture on why am I breeding, bla bla bla. I simply would like some advice on breeding a small dog because I am unexperienced and only know what I have read. I need to know how to find the right stud, how to mate the dogs, how to maintain a healthy pregnancy and make sure that she delivers her pups properly. Please, any advice would be appreciated.:)

i'm not an experienced breeder but i think the 1st thing you should do is have your female tested for any hereditary or congenital dieases. like CERF Screening (Canine Eye Research Foundation), Patellar Luxation Test, etc. you should make sure she won't pass along anything bad to the babies before breeding her.

She is also too young to be bred
females should not be bred intil they are at least 2
If you do a search , I've already posted quite a bit on what it takes to be a responsible breeder vs a byb
After that I can answer specific questions if you still have them.

You will not find any great stud dogs unless she meets all the prerequisits I have listed on the forum

Breeding takes a lot of time and should not be taken lightly

Blah, Blah, Blah?!? There is a extremely important reason why people lecture on the responsiblities of breeding. To take it lightly and imply that advice is just "blah, blah, blah" shows to me you just don't want to hear the facts of irresponsible breeding. Go ahead and don't even think twice about it. Blah...Blah...Blah.

My sister has a female pek. that she bought from someone who didnt have there female checked and winged it with a beautiful papered male. We thought that the breeder was reputable.she was wrong. she got chole 7 years ago, now she has a skin condition where she is bald alot and itching, she has different shampoos and oils she needs and even a special food. She also has seziures all the time, it is so sad. I have to have her at my house alot when they are going to be late getting home. If she had checked the breeders background and if the breeder would have avoided breeding her dog all together maybe we would have never run into this. By saying I wonder how many other familys have to go thru this stuff because people wanted a x-tra $. I used to want to breed my dog. I came to this site and it really opened my eyes. I now encouraged people people to not byb,and leave it to the breeders who know what they are doing. Save everyone who has owned a byb pet the heartache and get your pup fixed.;)

The first thing I ask is all the silly stuff "whats the reason" "are you Just doing this to make money ?" you know, blah blah blah.

Shelter dogs need homes more then breeders need your money.

When considering breeding dogs its not like you can just go and say "ok so how do I do it" and expect no one to lecture you. If you think you are ready to breed then you have to understand the money and risk involved. Like the risk of your dog dying! Also to just figure you can go find a nice male and put him with your female and being so inexperienced you are not totally realizing what breeding is. Its not just putting two dogs together that look good. You can't just read a little and get some advice you need to do a ton of research. First and foremost getting all the health checks as people have suggested including making sure the male is tested. Then you also want to make sure your dog and the dog you will breed her with are exactly what they should be for their breed. Again just being papered means nothing anyone can get papers for a purebred dog even byb's. Is your dog even papered? From a breeder? Have a good pedigree?

Just to give a bit more help rather than just a lecture, a mom dog needs to have puppy food closer to the end of the pregnancy to help the pups. You should have a box set up that she can go into to it to give birth, have rags and newspaper in it to help with clean up. Make sure she always has food and water. Make sure she is on a quality diet before you even breed her meaning no by-products, you can get suggestions listed in the feeding frenzy section on this dog forum, many posts in there list great foods. Be VERY picky about the male you get make sure all health checks are done on him look at the papers from the vet and his pedigree and know the health of his lines. Do this with your dog too before breeding her.

Please do reconsider breeding though, there are just soooo many dogs and pups out there trying to find homes. Responsible breeders spend years researching before ever breeding and most show their dogs though not all. See if any of the dogs in the pedigree of your girl's have been shown. Check and recheck health problems in your girl's lines and the male's too. I've said this a lot but it is very important. Just consider all the risks, death being the biggest, c-sections too, heartbreak if pups die more heartbreak if mom dies, thousands of dollars possibly being spent if she has any trouble and at least hundreds to get all the health checks. Just really consider it all and as far as health of your dog and the stud check all papers dont' just believe what people say. Why is it that you want to breed? I am just curious.

there are almost 500 pekingese who are listed on petfinder who don't have homes. That is only that breed. There are 100's of thousands more who go to sleep cold and scared w/ nothing to live for. Those are the dogs people need to be helping. Don't add to this problem. I'm sure we won't be able to convince you not to breed your puppy(by the way, she is still a PUPPY!) Maybe you will think about it, though. I guess these responses were not what you wanted to hear, maybe you didn't hear them(blah, blah, blah) but, if you are a responsible person( not just breeder) you won't do this.

As many of us have said time and time again....There are so many pets killed every year just because they can't find a home.....Please don't contribute to the problem....Especially if you can't do it properly....I'm sure once you do the research you'll see that when breeding you more times then not put out more money then you take in....I'm sorry if all of this is just the "Blah,Blah,Blah"you didn't want to here but breeding takes time, money, knowledge and dedication that once some people start doing it they find they don't have it to give.

Some might say this site can be harsh at times, but for questions like this I applaud everyone for saying and giving the true facts regardless if thats what lovedoggies wanted to hear!
