Do you know the story on this baby Diane?. I've never seen a collar like this before... very creative. The Moluccan is beautiful!. We do have issues with our Moluccan biting/breaking her wing and tail feathers.. she's done this since we got her.. no plucking thank goodness and we're saying prayers it never starts. :(

I've never seen one of those either. I do have a question for anyone that has a collar for their bird. In thinking of the e~collars (lampshade style) that are put on dogs & cats to keep them from scratching and licking a wound. I have used these collars and it is common for the dog/cat to bang into stuff until they get used to it. Do the birds do the same thing, and if they do....is it dangerous for their fragile necks? This may be a stupid question, but I just had to ask.........lol.

Apparently this bird goes outdoors with the rest of the flock during the day. Had been happy and very active for quite a while and then all of a sudden the bird became depressed, and inactive then began the plucking of it's crop area. So began the blood work, tests etc etc. The lady just got a call from the vet on 2/19 and it seems the bird has a severe viral infection. The cream prescribed is $107 for small tube. Vet also has bird on Haldol - I am not sure what that is for. Anyway at least they finally have a diagnosis.

Haldol is an extremely powerful psychotropic drug prescribed for such minor annoyances as hearing voices (often interactive) and having hallucinations. I know a few people on it and it does wonders but it was always prescribed as a last resort. I assume the vet knows what he is doing though.

Indications
Haloperidol is indicated in the management of manifestations of acute and chronic psychosis, including schizophrenia and manic states. It may also be of value in the management of aggressive and agitated behavior in patients with chronic brain syndrome and mental retardation and in the symptomatic control of Gilles de la Tourette's syndrome.

Way more than anyone would ever want to know about Haldol. (http://www.mentalhealth.com/drug/p30-h02.html)

That bird must have severe issues to be on such a powerfull drug. But I guess when they resort to self destruction such as picking their own feathers out then that is a severe problem itself *sigh*

I have heard of big birds being on Haldol before. I don't know anything other than what Arlo's Dad has said but have heard of it being prescribed before for plucking. Too's are notoriously sensative birds.
