Hi to everyone,

Yesterday I had the pest control man around here to do the annual spray inside and outside of the house for cockroaches/red back spiders/ants etc.
I asked him the stuff he uses would irritate my little Maltese Oliver to which he replied "No".
I arrive home today from work to discover poor little Ollie dribbling at the mouth and rolling around all over the carpet.
The smell is pretty potent in the house and all the skirting boards of the house on Ollies level has been done as well as his usual sleeping places.
To say the least I am not very happy as if I knew this would have happened to Ollie, I wouldnt have had the house done.
He is irritated on his chin (I take it he has laid in the spray) and sliding around trying to itch it and he is doing a little whimpering cry.
I took him to the vet this afternoon and he puts it down to he had a reaction to the spray that was used and to just air the house and keep Ollie outside.
Thats no use to me as Ollie is a house dog and just sits outside barking and probably driving the neighbours up the wall.
Does anyone have a similar situation happen to them or any suggestions about what is wrong with my poor boy?
Thank you all for your time

Did the vet say anything about giving him benedryl to help with the itching? I would call and ask. When our dogs have an allergic reaction to something we give them childrens benedryl.

chemicals can be toxic - I think you should contact the company that sprayed and discuss the reactions - it could be poisonous to your dog. It is also free to call your vet and discuss the symptoms or national poisoncontrol. Better to be safe than sorry.

I would call the pest control place and ask them what pesticide they used and get the exact ingredients for your veterinarian. If your dog has the toxic chemical on him, giving him a bath with a little bit of shampoo (not a lot) to help remove the chemicals off his body. If he is sensitive to shampoo, just use luke warm water. Don't scrub him because that will irritate the skin and allow the chemical to absorb faster into his body. Use a faucet sprayer if you have one to help loosen the chemical instead of your hands. Also, if they sprayed in the home, wash his food and water bowl with soap and water to remove any residue from the chemicals.

Pest control companies I have dealt with always caution to remove the pets from the premises until all fumes are gone. Also, it is suggested to mop the floors and wash all bedding to remove any residue that can get on their feet and body. Carpeted areas should not be sprayed at all, just spot treated along the base of the walls, if necessary.

Thank you very much for your responses.
My poor little Ollie was very irritated most of the night. I mopped the house 4 times and sponged down the skirting boards and walls at his level. I will give the bedding a wash too today.
He seems to be ok today and resuming back to normal.
It really annoys me that when I asked the pest contoller if the spray was dog friendly he said that it was. Also we were home while he sprayed in the house and he never told us to go out, except for when he was spraying the outside!
Anyway I think in future I will stick to natural methods instead of ghastly pesticide sprays.

Hello,

i own a Maltese/Silky terrior. I have had my dog for about 6 years now. Every year around the same time i am in Australia so in Summer or close to Spring my dog gets very stressed and his skin gets very irritated. Temperatures here dont help. Sorry i dont know where your from so you could very well know about Australia and our February Heat.

He begins to scratch and pull out his fur with stress till he has sores on his back cause his skin is so itchy.

The vet told me that it is a gene trait of the Maltese and because my dog is part Maltese his allergies are prominent. All i can do is tell him to stop scratching when he does give him plenty of baths because of the heat here and if it gets really bad rub cream into his skin.

I cant stand watching him go through this but apparently there is nothing my family can do except fork out for very expensive antibiotics which we cant afford.

I have been worried about my dog which is what lead me to this site and you were asking what else the problem could be. Your vet put it down to the chemical spray but in the Maltese the allergys are, well can be seasonal and im suprised your vet didnt mention the skin irrriations when you took ollie there.

I am going to look into this further cause i cant stand watching my dog so irritated and i just wanted to share that bit of info in case it helped at all or answered any of your questions.

Michelle!

I think Oliver's reaction is definitely from the spray used and not normal allergies. Has this cleared up? Hope Oliver is doing well now. Please update us.

Boy I hope your baby is ok and feeling better. I will never let anyone spray in my house anything. I dont let the landscaper put anything down in my back yard either. I feel they pick everything up on their paws then they lick their paws and stuff.
My dogs have major allergies and I hate chemicals. What I do to keep bugs away. I Spray my whole yard with Garlic and water mixture that I let furment for over two weeks. I havent seen fleas with this. When I do dishes I throw a pot of hot soapy water on my stoop ( I let it dry before my dogs go out again) I heard it keeps ants away havent seen any of them since started doing that. I clean my garbage cans with hot soapy water but dont rinse them so they have soap film in them ( again to keep ants and bugs away. I clean my baseboards in my house with soapy water and leave the soapy film on it. Seems to help no bugs and I feel this is safer then sprays and stuff.
Good luck and let us know how Oliver is doing.
