I have a California kingsnake who has alternating rings of black and white. He is about a year and a half old now. His name is Beetlejuice, because his coloration reminded me of the sandworm off of the movie Beetlejuice, and he even burrows through the bedding in his cage just like a sandworm. He has very nice 150 gallon aquarium for a home and when he gets much bigger, he'll be thankful that the tank is about 4 feet long. I can't stand to see the snakes at the pet stores crammed into 1ftx1ft cages. As far as snakes go, I find him to be quite friendly. He knows the difference between hands and food. To him, hands are a way out of the tank and he'll eagerly use you as an expressway.
If you are bothered by the nature of snakes or feel troubled by their eating habits then snakes clearly are not for you. I would very much like to talk with people that have snakes and like them very much.

Well, I love snakes, :) I breed snakes. It's a hobby. I have quite a few right now, mainly ball pythons (about 25). I also have boas, rattlesnakes, a California kingsnake and one California mountain kingsnake (Lampropeltis zonata). I have owned many California kingsnakes, they are a pleasure to work with although I have learned over the years that I prefer boids much more than colubrids. Just a personal preference really, I don't have anything against them and all in all I think Cali kings are one of the most contrasted beautiful snakes. Here is a picture of one I have had for about 2 years:

If you have pics of your snake I would love to see it. Sounds like he's got quite a home with you.

I never thought about breeding my snake, although I was adamant about having the poor guy sexed when he became big enough. I didn't want to be calling the snake him if in reality it was a her, stuff like that tends to bother me a little. This is the second snake that I've owned and perhaps the thousandth one I've handled. My first snake was a ribbon snake. He had a good temperment and was rather glutonous from what I recall. His name was Demetreus, and when I had gotten him, he was already quite old.

I have Some snakes also, Ive only been into reptiles for a year or so after i rescued an iguanna(i adopted him out after) and now i have 4 cornsnakes, 1 ball python and 2 greybanded kingsnakes. I plan on breeding at end of my veterenary technicians course. I Love snakes and can never stop talking about them(gets on my friends nerves lol). Oh and curious. What do you use as substrate for your cal? I just use newspaper for mine because its easier to keep my cage clean and dust free and also not expensive(since i have alot of them)
