Hello fellow pet lovers. I want to share my heart break with you, in hopes of saving you from going through the same thing. In the past month, I have had 3 of my babies go to The Rainbow Bridge. I have lost my yorkie mix Boo, my pug NayNay and my pug Harley. They were indoor dogs that loved to play outside. I have a fence up so I would just open the back door for them and they would play until I heard them at the door wanting in. I live in the woods with tons of trees. Well bed time one night, all was well. When I woke up, Boo was dead. She was still in her little bed "asleep" with a little vomit around her mouth. Of course I was devastated. They have always been utd on vaccines etc. I jsu could not explain it. Well a couple of weeks later, the same with Nay Nay. I checked everything. I had even gotten paranoid that maybe some cruel person had poisoned them. So, I only let Harley out on a leash or in the back if I could stay at the window and watch. Harley seemed fine all day. Then early afternoon she started stumbling, had poor balance. I took her to our vet asap! She passed away shortly after arriving at the vet. He did not perform a necropsy but from the blood work when she first arrived, he told me that she and probably the others died from acorn poisoning. I knew that they played with them. One would take one in her mouth and the chase was on with the others. It was their game. I did fuss and tell them to drop it when I seen them. I did not even think of poisoning, I was just afraid in their excitement that they could choke. I certainly didn't know that they were chewing them up and ingesting them. I knew that squirells eat acorns, so I just never even thought that it was hurting my girls. I have searched on the internet. Seems acorn poisoning happens a lot with horses and cows, but I found some other instances with dogs. I feel so guilty, I should have known. So, I am just passing this on. Just in case anybody else is like I was and had no clue of the dangers. Please be careful if you live around oak trees.
Thanks for listening,
Bonitta

Sorry to hear about this!! I had no idea, we don't have acorns around where we live, but may be somewhere with Trinity where they are.
She loves to tear off small pine branches and pine cones and chew on them, acorns would be no exception.
I hope you plan and getting some new dogs, they really are nice to have around.
Again, sorry about your loss!!

Bo,
Thanks so much for posting this warning. I didn't know until now what your poor babies had succumbed to. I have two acres of woods on my property, with several oaks. I do not believe any are close enough to the fence to have acorns drop inside but will have to recheck. It is very thoughtful of you to post knowledge you have experienced from your terrible loss. Thanks again Bo!

Thank you!
I questioned and questioned the vet. Why all of them? Why in such a short time? Are the acorns more potent this year? We have lived here 8 years, always had dogs, they always played out there. I am a country girl, why had I never heard of this before?

OMGosh Bo, I am so sorry to hear about Harley, NayNay & Boo.:(
Thanks so much for posting this warning about acorns. Squirrels can disperse them in a yard, even if the trees are far enough away for the acorns to not drop directly in the yard. When I was a kid, I would watch the squirrels gather them, so I thought "Hmmmm, they must be tasty", so I tasted one and it was sooooo bitter..... Guess I was a very curious kid.
Big {{{{hugs}}}} for you Bo!

I'm so sorry to hear about your babies, Bo!
I had no idea acorns were poisonous. I have a huge oak tree in my front yard that goes crazy with acorns every year. And when I say crazy, I mean CRAZY!!!! It's not a problem for Passion because she's confined to the back yard, but Bailey gets to do what she wants - and she loves those squirrels, so you'd better believe that oak tree is her #1 place to be. Wow... thank you so much for the info Bo and I'm so very sorry that you had to learn it this tragic way.

Thank you all for your kind words. I have been so sick with all of this. I know it sounds silly, but I felt like a terrible mom for letting this happen. I was embarrassed to even post. But, I did not want anybody else or their babies to go through this. Thank you all again.

Thank you for posting this information. Do not feel like you were a bad mom and never feel embarassed. I have never heard of such a thing with acorns. I do not have them in my yard, but we do have plenty of other bushes which I worry about.
It is difficult to constantly keep an eye on our pets, especially when they are outside. They get into so many different things, and even when we try to puppy-proof or doggie-proof our homes and yards, animals will still find a way to get into things. I am having a horrible time with this right now with Sasha. I am so paranoid everytime I see Sasha go near something or get even a piece of fuzz in her mouth. I heard her start snoring the other night and I got worried so I got out of bed and checked on her. Anyways, sorry for my rambling. But as I said before, do not feel like you were a bad mom. You did not let the bad things happen and if you had known the acorns were a problem, im sure you would have done your best to prevent anything bad from happening....and your dogs know this too!

Bonitta. I am so sorry for you losing them. I read this the other day but could not post anything. I hope you are okay. I would never have guessed acorns to be harmful. We have live oaks all over with millions of acorns on the ground. I even thought about preparing them for bird. Please don't blame yourself. Your were giving them a quality life by letting them play outside. How would you know. Sending prayers to you and your loved ones. Take care.

Oh my gosh that is just horrible! I'm so very Sorry!
Prayers and Hugs!
Oh, Bonitta I am so sorry to hear this, you are a wonderful mother :(
I'm glad you posted, I had no idea about acorns being poisonous, I have several large oak trees in my garden (front and back), only yesterday the new kitty Gomez was playing with them!!! You're right about them being particularly abundant this year. We've been joking all fall about having to sit our back with crash helmets on, we've been bonked on the head more times than I can count! I wonder what it is in them that's so poisonous for dogs but not for squirrels?
I'm so sorry for your heartache ((((((((((HUGS))))))))))

Thank you Therese and Gina!
I am not sure what makes them bad for certain animals. In the beginning I just could not accept that was what happened. So when I googled it, it does kill dogs, horses and cows. It just blows my mind.

Oh Bonitta I am so sorry to hear this. I have been away for a few days and just saw this post. My heart goes out to you and the rest of your family. Thank you for posting this. We were just discussing what tress to get to plant in the back yard. Oak was one of them until now. Thank you again.
