Hi I am so glad I found this board! I have a yellow lab named Gracie and she's one year old today (Nov. 8) Anyway, towards the end of August I noticed for the first time that she had fleas! She's never had them before and I have been wondering where she got them from. So, I bought some shampoo for dogs that was supposed to treat her flea problem. Everything looked fine and then 3 weeks later they were back! I thought it wasn't something I needed to go to the vet about, so I just reshampooed. Well, I can't get these to get off her and she used to have a thick coat but she's got alot of nearly bald places where she's scratched. Help! Do I need some kind of shampoo to stop the fleas from coming back, or do I need to take her to the vet? Reply fast, the weather is getting colder and her fur is thin. Thanks!

I'm no expert at all but if the shampoo isn't helping then I'd take her to the vet for something else like "Advantage", or whatever the vet recommends. You also should wash her bedding and anything else since there could be fleas & their eggs found in that too.

Hi Graciethelab, I posted a reply to this under the thread you started about Gracie's weight loss.

I agree with Jenny though that a trip to the vet may be a good idea. (See my longer reply under your other post).

Hi
I would take her to the vets and ask him if he recommends Front line
to kill the fleas. Then ask the vet for treatment that does the whole of your rooms
in your house. That's the only way you are going to get rid of your fleas.
The trouble with fleas they, like to have a blood meal off your dog.
Then go on the carpet to do their thing.
Then lay their eggs in the carpet or under the skirting boards in your house.
or were ever your dogs goes. The fleas will go. Till you break their breeding cycle
Which can take up to six week to really get rid of the fleas.

hi. answered this somewhere on this forum awhile back. i had farmdogs for many years and gave them brewers yeast tablets and none ever had a flea or tick. you should check with your vet first, but it always worked for my dogs and is completely natural. i have a cockeer mix now and he has never had any either. i give i tablet for every 10 pounds of dog weight. the dogs should eat them like candy... my mickey looks forward to his.. i have my morning meds and he has his. i also gave it to my cat and for 14 years he was pest free also. hope this helps. penpaws :)

there is advantage which is highly effective, the fleas dissappear within a couple days. but like the others said you must vacuum everything like couch, floor, beds and where ever the dogs are. they lay eggs in the carpet and try and make sure you vacuum by the walls. they like to hide there. throw out the vacuum bags immediately, OUTSIDE. they can live a long time in there and they can also get out. wash all toys and bedding. it is alot of work. you can by premise spray. here in canada it is like $40.00 so in the U.S it will be cheaper. The spray is called Premise 3000. if you do all this it will clear it up, but you have to be sure to give them advantage once a month. you get a 6 month supply for $63. then again it will be cheaper there.good luck!
