Pack of angry Chihuahuas attacks police officer
Ankle-biting dogs emerge from house as cop escorts traffic violator home

Updated: 1:40 p.m. ET Dec. 30, 2005

FREMONT, Calif. - A pack of angry Chihuahuas attacked a police officer who was escorting a teenager home after a traffic stop, authorities said.

The officer suffered minor injuries, including bites to his ankle, police Detective Bill Veteran said.

The five Chihuahuas escaped the 17-year-old boy’s home and rushed the officer as he stood in the doorway Thursday, authorities said. The teenager had been detained after the traffic incident.

The officer was treated at a hospital and returned to work less than two hours later.

Now, this kind of pisses me off. I know they are small and their bites aren't so bad, but that is pure aggression and any other dog that did anything similar to what those Chi's did, would be put to sleep and the owners would be sued. I just love how society punishes one dog and thinks the other is cute.

I agree Riley! Here is the California Civil Code I got from a dog bite law site:

California Civil Code section 3342 imposes strict liability on the owner of a dog when the dog bites a person. In this State, a dog does not get "one free bite." The "dog bite statute" (Civil Code section 3342) states:
3342. (a) The owner of any dog is liable for the damages suffered by any person who is bitten by the dog while in a public place or lawfully in a private place, including the property of the owner of the dog, regardless of the former viciousness of the dog or the owner's knowledge of such viciousness. A person is lawfully upon the private property of such owner within the meaning of this section when he is on such property in the performance of any duty imposed upon him by the laws of this state or by the laws or postal regulations of the United States, or when he is on such property upon the invitation, express or implied, of the owner.

So at the very least these dogs should be documented as vicious and tracked as such. The officer had to go to the hospital for heaven's sake! I HATE these double standards. The law is the law!

Chihuahuas Have For The Most Part Always Been Vicious Little Dogs, I Know Because I Have Some, I Have Always Had Chihauhaus, And I Have Had Some Who Were Real Sweeties, I Also Have Pitbulls, They Do Not Act Near As Crazy As My Chihuahuas. I Don't Believe Any Dog Bites Should Get As Much Attention As They Get In The News Today. It Is A Known Fact, All Dogs Will Bite If They Feel Threatened. You Know What, Kids Bite Too, But That Does Not Make National News, I Have Known Some Vicious Little Biting Kids In My Time, Maybe We Should Track Them.

Oh GOD no, I have been bitten by them also. It is not a tear like a larger dog but it hurts, becomes infected and one suffers alot from their bite, maybe that is why I am partial to the larger breeeds, if they are going to bite, take my arm off. lol

Well I can see why they don't, its mostly because as some have said Chis do a lot less damage than bigger dogs. Also not to pick on the pitbull, as I think they are great dogs, but when a pitbull is trained to fight they lock on and don't release, usually they rip and tear too. Where as chis and little dogs will just usually nip. I love my chihuahua to death, she's not an ankle biter like some, again not every dog in the same breed is going to be the same. My little girl is a sweetie, just as there are many sweet pits and I personally know a very sweet rottweiler and 2 rottweiler mixes. That has to be the weirdest article I've seen, a pack of chis attacking ? Weird. Anyway, I am sure because they are little dogs and because they aren't a breed originally bred for fighting they give slack for them. Was the teenager the police man was asscorting the owner of the chis? If so it wasn't pure agression as they were "defending" their owner.

Regardless if they are small and may not do as much damage...the law is the law. This owner needs to be fined, the dogs documented as vicious, and the owner needs to pay for all medical care, NOT the taxpayers of California.

Exactly JustJo. I think it's ridiculous that just because they are a small breed their owner isn't held accountable. And I think it's ridiculous people find it funny. Dogs are put to sleep over doing something like this everyday, but because they are small it's ok?? What it if were a child they attacked? They could have done damage to a child.
