I'm serously considering getting a dog (a yorkshire terrior to be exact). Something that I've wanted to do for about two years now, but I haven't yet because I'm afraid I won't be able to spend enough time with it. I want the dog to be happy and healthy and not feel neglected. I would have lots of time with it but I'm not sure if it would be enough. I work split shifts Tue-Fri from 8:30am-1:30pm and 4:00pm-10:00pm and then nights Fri. and Sat. Is this to much time to leave a dog home alone?

My suggestion to you would not to get one dog but two. They will keep each other company. Dogs are so pack oriented, family oriented, that they stress when alone. It isn't natural for them. Besides it's double the fun for you. Both the pups will really want to be with you all the time since you will be the alpha in their pack but they will be comforted with each other. Good luck.

I've kept two dogs for many years now. Right now I have three. It's a madhouse sometimes but boy is it fun.

Melissa-
I agree with Becky. You should get two dogs so when you aren't home they won't be alone. But make sure they get along and you play with each an equal amount of time.

Hi Melissa and welcome :)

I believe you have plenty of time to spend with a Yorkie. Many people have to work for a living and are very good pet owners... In a perfect world, we could all stay home with our kids and pets 24/7, but this isn't a perfect world and we get along as best we can. I agree with Becky and Sarah that two Yorkies would be better than one to keep each other company... but then you must remember it will double the food bill, vet bill, etc... and can you afford it. Also please remember that any dog that is left alone for an extended period of time is apt to get itself in trouble.... they chew, potty and bark... they are social animals and many don't like to be alone. If you decide you wouldn't be able to spend enough time at home, maybe you would consider volunteering at an animal shelter or rescue group?. There are so many animals that are starved for love and attention... you would definately get your fill of paw hugs and wet kisses!... and not have to worry about leaving one at home alone. Best of luck in whatever you decide :D
