I belong to a group of 73 dog lovers around the world that are participating in a "K-9 World Tour" of Flicka The Flamingo. The deal is that Flicka comes to where you live and spends time with your dog and sees the sites of your area. She travels with a journal which documents her journeys and you can add pictures to it. She also has a box full of mementos (tourist type stuff) from wherever she has been and (very important) a spool of pink thread to repair her with. She started out in the Netherlands and is currently traveling the U.S. We received Flicka on Friday and today was our first day with her. Bullwinkle is IN LOVE!! He is normally not possessive but he is guarding Flicka from Rockie. If she comes within 2 feet he gives out a low growl which is unusual for him. I think it is all the smells from all of the other dogs on Flicka because other hosts and hostesses have reported the same behavior in their dogs. Flicka came from Buffalo, NY (her last host city) and came bearing gifts of some dog toys and a local BBQ sauce native to Buffalo. I was told the toys are for the heartbreak of having to send Flicka on again in a week or so. Flicka's next stop is Sacramento and then she is off to South America, then back to the U.S., then to Canada, then to Europe. What an exciting thing to participate in. Anyway, here are a couple of pics of Bullwinkle with Flicka today.

Bullwinkle had to take Flicka outside too!

Wow Jo.. thats so kewl!. What a neat idea. I wonder how many host families have had to run out and buy new Flicka's hahahahha. If she were to come visit my house she wouldn't last 10 minutes  . My dogs seek and destroy stuffed toys. Wishing Flicka a safe trip!!.

Well Jan if Jo doesn't have to run out to buy another Flicka due to destruction she will have to anyway because Bullwinkle will have to have his Flicka around and will be sad when Jo "sends" Flicka on her way. Bullwinkle looks so cute on the deck with Flicka. What a neat idea to be participating in!

Flicka has had to have "surgery" a few times so far but is actually in pretty good shape. She seems to be a tough bird! The group does have two "spare" Flickas on hand in case of destruction beyond repair. Funny thing is that Bullwinkle usually tears things up right away but he is being super gentle with Flicka. She doesn't have a squeaker so maybe that's it. He still won't let Rockie near her.

I am taking Flicka in to some historic sites today to get her picture with them for her travel log and for people around the world to see Virginia. I am not taking Bullwinkle or Rockie since Bullwinkle is having a lot of lameness on his right side currently. Too much getting in and out of the car. Still haven't decided on a memento to add to the box. Everyone is trying to keep this K-9 World Tour at a low expense for everyone so there are things like postcards, magnets, maps, etc. in there. I have really enjoyed reading the travel journal. These people are a hoot!

Edit: Forgot to say that Flicka began her journey on September 9th.

Flicka and I went out today. The dogs did not go since Bullwinkle is so lame right now but Flicka and I had tons of fun! We started out at Maymont Park. Flicka sat on this wonderful sculpture of kids and their dog playing. The stupid thing is that dogs are no longer allowed in the park. Kind of makes the sculpture meaningless to me.

Flicka had to meet the local geese. They were very curious about her and swam right up. I grabbed her quickly though because I didn't want her to fall in the lake.

Flicka is sitting with the famous cast iron dog in Hollywood Cemetery. Little Florence Bree's brother begged his father for this dog, which used to stand outside a merchant's shop in Richmond. The father eventually bought the dog for him and when his little sister Florence died of scarlet fever the dog was placed at her grave. The dog not only watches over Florence but also was put there to save it from being melted down for confederate bullets during the Civil War. For well over a hundred & forty years stories still circulate that the dog moves around on her gravesite, that it's eyes follow visitors, and that it's bark is heard at night. Visitor's to Hollywood Cemetery often place gifts and such at the dog's feet and on little Florences grave. Flicka just HAD to meet him!!

And she had to meet the horses. They look like they are thinking "What's That Thing??"

I agree Jan!! It would be so cool for PetLovers to do something like this. It's not expensive...just takes a little gumption to write in the journal and take pictures to show people your pets and where you live and tell about it. I am so glad I joined in on this!! I am just thinking why did I get Flicka right before Xmas?? The Post Office is going to be crazy when I go to mail her to Sacramento!!! LOL!

Oh man!! I wish Flicka would have arrived later this month. You could have brought her out to the New Year's party.....lol. Your pics and narration are awesome Jo!! I am so glad you have Bullwinkle in them too, but too bad Rockie is camera shy. I can just see her looking at Flicka with that terrier gleem in her eye.....LOL.

Jo - just have a snowstorm delay Flicka's next stop and take her with you to SD. That would be so cool to have pictures from the New Year's Eve party. There isn't any strict time schedule for her ........is there?

Thanks for sharing the pictures and the history on your area. It was really interesting. I had to stop and imagine what people who saw you there with Flicka taking pictures ............must have thought about you. LOL

We should do something like this at PetLovers. That would be so neat!

Flicka was in San Diego with keepher and I over Christmas and was sen on to Sacramento last Wednesday. I miss Flicka! Anyway here are a few pics of her adventures here:

Flicka visits Dog Beach:

She is sitting high up on the sign because she didn't want to get "marked".

Flicka just sits and watches the action.

Flcika helped the lifeguards when they had to rescue a boat that had swept up on a sandbar. They left Flicka in charge of keeping watch!

Flicka found a nice beach log to kick back and watch Keepher play ball.

Oh oh!! Incoming dog! Watch out Flicka!!!

Flcika got Dane-napped by Anna the Great Dane. It took 15 minutes to rescue her from Anna. I thought Flicka was doomed!

What a great thing to do, Flicka is a lucky Flamingo. I love all the pics Jo. That pic with Keepher, Keepher look like she is ready to pucker up and give Flicka a smooch. Now that is a really neat idea, we should get a petlovers mascot and send it around to all petlovers and wherever else they want to send it.
