Well, today was rabies shot day for Chibi (my pom). I believe my veterinarian gave his rabies and fourth round puppy shot. He cried, of course, when both were given, but he finally got over himself by the end of the visit. All appeared well.

We both took a nap this afternoon, and he alerted me that he had to potty a few hours later. I picked him up, and OHMYGOD! He let out this shriek so loud, so ear piercing...I tried to pick him up again, and the same thing. He just looks at me with the saddest look he could give, and his ears have stayed down since.

I've examined him and don't see anything physically wrong with him. The area above his hind leg is where it is hurting, where the rabies was administered. The other shot was given at his shoulder, which appears fine.

He has been running around like normal, it's just when I pick him up.

The veterinarian's office closed for the weekend at noon today. I've attempted calling her pager, but hasn't called back.

What do I do??? I'm getting nervous, plus I don't want my neighbor thinking that I'm abusing my dog (this shrieking thing is loud!) Plus, I know that he and Dakota, my husky, play very rough with each other. This has to stop soon, right?

BTW, he's up to 3.75 pounds today!!! YEAH Chibi!!

I'm pretty sure that the rabies vaccination will tighten the muscles where it was administered. I know it can do that to humans when they get a rabies series. Chibi is probably just experiencing that. I'm going to try and do a little more research on it and see what I can come up with. In the meantime keep us posted.

I am sure Chibi will be fine by tomorrow. It is probably just an injection site reaction. If he does not improve I would call a 24 hour vet and verify that there nmay not be other issues going on. Let us know how he is!

My dog Noel was really sensitive after getting her first rabies shot. Its very painful (have you had a hep b or tetanus shot lately? Oh man!) but once the medicine dissolves, it will feel better. Just keep an eye on it, make sure its not hot or infected looking.

This morning seems to be better, I think. He was back to his usual self - running around like a fool and biting and barking at Dakota.

He still hollers when I pick him up...but I think he's playing me for a fool now. He hollers every time I go for the back leg, it's almost too funny to watch. However, Dakota can wrestle with him and grab him with his mouth on the same spot??

I still haven't received a call back from my vet, so I tried calling around town today. There's the university vet school here, but refuses to answer any questions if you don't take your pet there! I don't get it!! This town isn't helpful on anything, let alone your pet. I'm just going to have to make a visit up there Monday, just to be certain.

Thanks again for calming me down...I was starting to freak out a bit...:)

Don't worry, we had a similar problem with our dog after
some injections.

After a few days, all was well again.
