I think it's just plain weird. Why not just use dogs that love to work? They do a wonderful job.

Actually.. they ARE using Rats to look for landmines already. But not 'remote-controlled' ones. They're trained properly to look for the scent, but don't weigh enough to set them off and are right in the findings almost 100% of the time. Just like dogs.. but they don't get blown up on accident. O_o; I just saw a show on it the other day.. Here's an article I found (http://www.clickertraining.com/karen/authors/?loaditem=0406_gambian_rats&itemnumber=21) relating to it.
It works just fine to train them, why would they need to do this?? Controlling them like that.. gah.
