Im am on a very tight budget, and i try to feed my dog the best food i can afford, i dont buy the store brand or cheap food, but i cannot afford the really expensive ones. Right now i Have Roxy on Health Diet Gourmet Cuisine. I just wanted to know what everybody thinks about this food.. When i have a bit more money, i usually buy her the Health Diet Chicken, but it is about 10-15$ more expensive so i cant afford to buy her that ALL the time... The other options i can afford would be Dog Chow, and Pedigree... I was just wondering what everyone's opinions on these foods are???

When i got Roxy, she wasnt very well fed, but since i got her, she has gained weight (although she is only 43 pounds, pretty small for a 15 month old Germand Shepherd, but she also has a very small frame, the vet told me she needed to gain a bit of weight but to do it very slowly) and her fur is very shiny now too...

Im just worried the food i am buying is not good enough, I want to give her the best i can, but being on such a tight budget, it can be hard...

Does anyone have any suggestions on good quality dog food brands that are not too expensive???

I also buy health Diet for my cat...

I don't have any experience with that food, I feed Passion Chicken Soup which is $27.99 for a 35lb bag. Passion and Roxy are pretty similiar looking as far as size goes (Passion weighs 58lbs) - A 35 lb bag will last me around a month or so. I think its a pretty good price for the quality of food.

Here's a link to the website: www.chickensoupforthepetloverssoul.com

Let us know what you think! Chicken Soup also makes cat food...

Well for about a 40 pound bag, it cost me around 20-22 $... The Health Diet Chicken is around 30$ for the same size, when i can afford it, thats what i buy her.. And a 40 pound bag lasts me about 1 1/2- 2 months and i feed her the ammount my vet reccomended, for her size and age and all...

There is a store locator on their website. It is a premium food so they do not carry it in most pet stores. I had to travel downtown to get it when Asia was on Chicken Soup. It is a great food! Asia just cannot have it because she has allergies and although it is mostly allergen free, it was not good enough to help Asia. She may be allergic to egg or milk.

here is the link for the locator...

Well i dont have any right now, last brand i bought her was Dog Chow... all i know is that i get the health diet from PetValu... I dont like it that much, when she was on Health Diet chicken, she was gaining a bit a weight (which was good, because she was malnourished when i got her, she had about 15-20 pounds to gain) and then on Dog Chow, she lost the weight she had gained, I feed her more of the Dog chow, but it doesnt seem to satisfy her, she is always hungry, like she is starving, and that didnt happend when on Health Diet Chicken. So i dunno.... What do you all think of pedigree?

Yeah your dog is going to be hungry when you feed the Dog chow cause there is no real meat in there and that is what they want. Pedigree isn't any better either.

Well even though the Health Diet has some ingedients I don't care for it is definitely WAY better than Dog Chow or Pedigree. If those are your choices I would say go back to the Health Diet and just feed her a bit less than you were or increase her exercise.

You can usually feed less of the more "expensive" brands so they often end up costing less to feed. To see a comparison of some of the different dog food brands go to: http://www.picnicpointpets.com/PRODUCTINFORMATION-DOGFOODS.htm
