I want to give my dog a bath, but he won't go near the bath.

It takes ages just to get into the bathroom, and even whens hes in the bathroom, there is no way in hell that he will go in the bath, I've tried coaxing him in, and picking him up, but he just growls fiercely at me.

How can I get him in the bath?

PS: He is 9 years old

I just pick mine up, how big is he? It is just a fear of water alot of dogs have them. when I used to give surge my malamute baths i would do it outside with a hose, he would do the same thing your dog does, after i startede doing that he was ok with baths cause it was be put on him and he wasnt being put in water. try that it may look funny but believe me it is better than getting a unpleasent growl.

I don't bathe my lab. I just wipe her down (body, ears, face, etc.) with dog bath wipes and she is OK with that. Every since she was a baby she has not liked the bath. Some say you don't need to bathe...some say you should. My vet said there is no reason to bathe a dog if they are keeping themselves clean. She has also had ear infections so this works out for us. If Bergie gets into something like dirt, etc...I just use the wipes and she is happy. On a side note...she jumped into the bath tub with Jim (hubby) the other day and shocked us! Maybe she just wants to bathe with someone! LOL

My dog ,Molly will jump into the bath tub on command.I used a lot of dog treats to teach her. Also start with no water,Molly was very willing to get into a dry tub.Once she was good at that,I put the water in before getting her for a bath. She doesn't like the sound of running water. Now any time I call her into the bathroom, she automatically goes into the bath tub.
Good luck though. My husbands lab mix hates water,so I just pick him up.

In the nice weather, I take the dogs outside and my fiance holds the leash and I hose 'em down (gently) and bathe them out there with them standing up. I can get Oscar into the bath no problem, but Noel is another story.

I have to take her to the groomers she gets scared because she is in an unfamiliar place and usually behaves, but sometimes they have to muzzle her.
