Hello,
I'm new here. I was hoping to get some advice/help. I have a male unnuetered Chihuahua that is about a week short of 5 months old. (I plan on getting him nuetered around 6 mo.) Anyway, I started litter box training him right away as a tiny pup. He took to urinating in the litter box great. He never messes when it comes to urinating. I can use newpaper, pee pads, or even the dog litter and he will use all three. The problem comes in when he has to poop. He tries to avoid going in the box in every way he can. He'll sneak in the hallway or bathroom or whatever corner he can find that I can't see him and poop. There are times although he will poop in his box. Most of the time that's when I catch him going to a corner and he see's me looking at him, then he'll run to his box and go. I don't even have to take him there, he knows by me just looking at him. But if he's real stubborn that day, he'll go outside his box right next to it.
I've tried newspaper, pads, dog litter. I always keep it very clean so he doesn't have to step on old pee to go. I've tried two litter boxes, thinking he maybe he wants a separate place to poop. But sometimes he will pee and poop in the same one, sometimes he'll use the second one to poop and sometimes he'll use the second one to pee as well as the first and find a corner in the house to poop.
One day he held his poop for the whole day and the whole night as I constantly kept my eye on him to go in his box. He wouldn't go so instead held it. The next morning he went three times in 20 minutes -- in his box.
I was wondering if anyone has had this problem and any advice on how to solve. I've thought of switching to outdoor training, but since he's doing so good with his urinating I hate to give up. Is he just stubborn, or is there something I should be doing to help him along. Will neutering help? I don't want this to become a habit that he doesn't overcome.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!
