Hello All,
I have one of the most rediculous questions ever... :o but I feel compelled to ask.
I just got a new baby sheltie 10 weeks old, and he is just a love! Beautiful blue merle boy, with one blue eye...
Now, my question is (oh geez)...
The little punk does NOT give me puppy kisses! I MEAN, COME ON!!! That's one of the BEST parts of having a puppy! I LOOVE puppy breath! lol
Any suggestions? I was even thinking of putting peanut butter on my nose to teach him to give kisses. Is it possible he eventually will, or do I have to bribe him with treats?
I can't believe I'm asking this. lol BUT IT'S IMPORTANT TO ME! Probably least of my worries, as he is going to be my agility star!
Thanks for the help!

I have a dog who refuses to give kisses as well, but I have never tried anything extreme to get him to. I know that puppies give kisses to try to win your appreciation. Maye you could try ignoring him a little but then see if he gets so bored that he jumps up and kisses you. I have no clue if this will work but what do you have to lose?

Thanks for the replies!
My friends have all been making fun of me. They're like "maybe you should focus on teaching him his name instead."
I know it's a silly question, I just LOVE puppy kisses!

Thanks so much! He is absolutely adorable, and a very calm puppy as well. Well, for now at least! It's my first time doing agility, so I'm really psyched. I obviously didn't get him just for that, I've always wanted a sheltie, but now that I have one, I really want to get into obedience and agility. Any info would be great!
Thanks everyone!

Maltina, that is a handsome young fella you have there. My wife and I have a 9 y/o sable female. Shelties are awesome, aren't they? When you are trying to get him to kiss, are you kissing back at him? I ask because dogs push their lips forward when they are scolding (like a person saying, "oh"), and they "smile" when they mean no harm. If you are trying to kiss back, the puppy may think that you are trying to scold him. Try giving him a BIG smile pulling the corners of your mouth as far back as possible, and talk to him in a low, but very high pitched voice to get him more excited. I am not sure that this will work, as a matter of fact, the only thing that I am sure of is that you will look silly doing this. My sheltie started giving me more kisses when I started smiling at her like this, though. It's something to try, and I hope that you find something that works, because those puppy kisses are the sweetest. Good luck, and keep us updated.

Thanks Steven!
Yeah, this is my first Sheltie, so I'm psyched. Although, I just contacted the breeder about something, and she informed me that she never did a vet check on him! I'm shocked! She seemed like a good breeder, goes to shows etc. Hmmm. Now I'm concerned. I'm going to make an appointment for him ASAP to make sure he is free of any heart murmurs etc.
I'll try the BIIIG smiles!

BEAUTIFUL puppy!!!!!
agility is a lot of fun. 10 weeks is perfect for starting to teach foundation skills... very simple nothing strenuous and all things you can do at home on your home.
If you want you can come sign up for free online class which you do whatever you want whenever you can... LOL It is lesson and activities set up to show you what to do with your dog at home.
I started teaching it because It worked great for my puppies and I knew others like me where having a great deal of trouble finding local puppy agility classes.
set up an account and take a peek...

What a beautiful sheltie pup! His ears are tipped very nicely and he has a very nice head. I used to have shelties for years and years...they have all passed over to Rainbow Bridge now and I miss them very much. I do not remember my shelties being really big kissers - or - maybe my memories are clouded with the HUGE kisses I get from my Dane. He is an extreme kisser. Can't miss those coming at ya! My Rockie is not a kisser either. She will lick my hand a bit, but then she is a rescue dog so who knows how she was raised. You could try the peanut butter trick...couldn't hurt.
You have a very beautiful boy there...good luck with him! Shelties make excellent obedience and agility dogs. Only one of mine (a sheltie mix) ever was a frisbee dog though.

How gorgeous!! Usually puppies kiss when they're hungry, and to show the leader "ok, you're the boss". Once he gets used to you, you'll probably be carrying around "wet ones" to clean off all the dog slobber!!! My pups always kissed, but now I've been teaching them to kiss to "say please give me back the ball you took out of my mouth!!!" Just that the other dogs don't really understand, and won't give it back!!!!! sunka

CONGRAT'S on your CUUUUUTE puppy! I just wanted to say that I think it's sweet that you want puppy kisses!! :) They're the best (when you can get them)! Just a tip..when you get him to kiss, protect your lips! Tuck them in. Our male was (and still is) a zealous kisser and my lips used to get nicked by his puppy teeth. ;) Oh, well....it IS worth it.

Thanks everyone!!! He's been sneaking in a faint lick here and there... : ) I just adore this little guy, he may just be the most well behaved puppy I have ever had!! I think all my friends are shocked that I chose to get a sheltie puppy, as I run a greyhound rescue group... but they are just so special!! Besides, I don't have anymore room on my couch due to my greyhounds, lol so I needed a breed that wouldn't mind being more active and sacraficing his couch space. lol
Thanks again for all your help... I'll post new pic's soon. : )
