Can someone give me advice on the proper way to crate train a puppy. She is a 4 month old Collie and I have no idea where to get started. Any advice would be great.:)

i will post others if i find them.
good luck!! we are going through the steps with our new pup and seems to be going well. he whines for about 5 minutes when the door first closes, but then he settles. he makes it all night without an accident (so far, knock on wood). occasionally he does wake up and let out a whine or a howl, but usually goes right back to sleep if i ignore it.

Great info Wendall :) . I think the important thing is to make sure the crate is a happy place for the pup.... toys and treats... it should never be used for punishment. Also, ignoring their cries is important... if you give them attention or let them out when they cry they will learn this will get them attention and continue. Good luck with the pups. :)

How long have you had your pup??
I have a new pup about the same age as yours and we are crate training him as well. I have had him for 3 weeks now. The 1st week he whined and for about 5-10 minutes every night when he went to his crate, but now he knows when it is time for bed and goes straight to his crate. He takes his stuff animal with him and I put his rubber bone in with him as well. Once he is in and settled down for the night, I reward him with a treat or two.
Just give your pup some time!
Good luck!!:)

Well we have had her for about a one and a half months and she seems to be fully house trained. The only big issue with her is she likes to bite a lot. Another question I have is how much exercise does a Collie need every day?I have had a Sheltie for 8 years but they are known for exercising themselves because they are very active outdoors but I have no idea what to do with the Collie. We have a medium sized backyard in the suburbs for her to roam but anything else I should be doing?

- make sure the crate is the right size and not too big, she should be able to turn around, stand and lay down only
- put the pup in the room where you are with the crate
- leave the door to the crate open toss some of her favorite treats in the crate; praise every time she goes in the crate
- continue that then eventually start closing the door but then letting her right out after a few seconds.
- start extending the time the door is closed
- Sleep time in there will get her more comfortable ,
-also feed her in there for awhile.
- make her feel it is a good safe place
- you can stuff a kong toy with treats and throw in some nylabones to make him happy
- leave a TV or radio on when you start leaving him in the crate when you exit the room
take it step by step and be consistent and patient
hope that helps
