Hello, i'm new here, I hope someone can help :)

Earlier this year my Rabbit Buffy gave birth to 2 rabbits, I took them to the vets when they were 4 months old and the vet told me one was a boy and one was a girl. I will tell you now that we named the male Tinny and the female J-lo as it will be easier to follow the story.

We have a huge massive 3 storey rabbit house and I wanted them to all live together so as soon as Tinny was 6 months old I took him and had him castrated. It cost me 47 pounds and a few days after he pulled his stitches out so I took him back and they glued him shut and gave him some anti-biotics and charged me another 47 pounds.

Last Saturday I went out to see if he was completely healed so I could put him back in with the girls. I picked up Buffy to stoke her and saw that she had blood all over her privates, she had just given birth. I don't know how I missed the fact that she was pregnant. I assumed that the babies were Tinny's.
I got the other girl out and left her to it as I know to leave the mother alone with her babies.
We checked the next day though and the babies were dead.

I put Buffy in with the other female while we cleaned out the house and the dead babies then when I went to get them back I found J-lo on top of Buffy, then it hit me, I checked and yes, J-lo is a boy. I will note here that the vets charged me 8 pounds to identify the sex of them.

I put J-lo in on his own and put Buffy and Tinny together, after all he had been castrated.
I called up a different vets and they said they could castrate J-lo on Wedesday so I took her(him) along and had it done and they only charged me 19.50, what a difference.

Ok so now everyone is unable to create babies right? And they can all live happily ever after?

My question is this how come when I look at where Tinny had the operation there is nothing there at all, just a scar.
When I look at J-lo's privates he still has big testicles which I can tell have been operated on, he doesnt even have any stitches he is quite normal as if nothing has happened.

Why do they look so different are there different procedures at different vets or (this has just entered my mind today) could Tinny have been female all along and the vets have operated on her anyway? I doubt they would tell me, it was their mistake.
This is really bugging me now, If Tinny was female in the first place I would never have had him(her?) done.

males are usually a simple procedures - the testicles are torn out (sounds disgusting and looks pretty rough if you've ever seen). They usually use a little skin glue and no big deal. The swelling and sacs can still look like testicles are there - I would watch for a few days, separate him if you are really concerned and try to get a closer look

good for you for taking them in

You really should have the girls done too. Female rabbits are very prone to getting uterine cancer. As a matter of fact I am dealing with that right now. My rabbit developed mastitis cysts which can be caused my uterine cancer the only way to help is to spay her and it may not even help. You really should have them all done.

sounds like they probably are still swollen from the operation, give him 2 weeks and it should disapear too.
now they can't have babies, but spaying wouldn't be a bad idea. once you have the money ofcourse. a spay is a little more expensive.
good luck with the bunnies and make sure that j-lo keeps pooping/peeing/eating.
also it may be, if there was a mistake at the other vets, that there was confusion b/w you and the staff as to the rabbit's gender. a spay would explain the larger price. but you can call and ask, no harm.

Thanks for the replies, I had a better look at J-lo (I really need to find a male name for him) today and his balls have shrunken a little and he's loking more like Tinny. I guess they were just swollen.;)
I tried to out them back together today and Tinny attacked him, I guess thats another thread though.:(
