Hi! It has been many years since I had a hamster. I bought one a week ago from a local pet store - he is slightly over 2 months old. I got a male teddy bear hamster who is so sweet! Can someone tell me if this sounds normal or not . . .. . The last couple of evenings, I woke him up out of a sleep and after he walked around for a bit, he did start to run on his wheel and run around. But then within 20 minutes or so, he seemed to just lie down and fall right back to sleep. The first time he did it, he fell asleep right in his food bowl. Last night he got off his wheel, walked up his ladder and laid down on the first landing and laid his head to the side. I swear, I thought both time he was dying. But then around 10:00 p.m., he got right back on the wheel and seemed fine the rest of the evening - running all night. He does seem to sneeze occasionally - but he doesn't have a runny nose, he has been eating, no runny eyes, etc. I am just concerned as to why, when he first awakes, he plays - then seems to drag himself into a corner and lay there for a while - and it is really scaring me. Any idea what the problem is? Is it just his age and maybe overdoing it when he first wakes up??? thx. brenda

Well, most hamsters don't really become active totally until later at night so you waking him earlier in the evening is a little shock probably for him. That could be why he plays a little and than goes back to sleep until the 10 pm and than runs like crazy. most hamsters like to get up later at night and run all evening until wee hours of the morning at least that is what all the ones I used to have did most evenings. They wouldn't get up until 10 or 11 pm and than play even if I woke them they didn't stay up long before going back to sleep until later.

Yea Hamster are up all night, and gerbils are opposite.

I had a hamster not to long ago and he was just fine. Untill I started noticing that he would lay down on his side and not move. I wasnt sure what was wrong with him, it looked like he was playing dead. But as time went on it got worse and worse. He started bleeding from his behind. Almost like he ate somthing he wasnt suppose to and is having a hard time passing it through. Im not sure what exactly happened but he was bleeding a lot and just died not long after that. I was so sad!!! :(
I got him from my friend who didnt want him anymore because he kept getting out.
I loved him so much...his name was peanut
