My mom has a 21 year old cat. He doesn't groom himself much and his fur is all chunky and matted. Is there anything I can do???

Hi ABYLOVER, have you tried brushing him with a soft bristle brush. Using a stiff wire one will only hurt while he still has matted hair, and can be rough on aging skin. I would softly brush him every day and eventually the knots will loosen.;)

I have tried brushing him with a brush. The fur keeps shedding, however, the clumps are so massive. Do you think if I keep doing it all the time, the clumps may get smaller? Thanks for the input??? Someone had told me a groomer won't touch older cats with that problem.

They sell dematting combs, but you have to be gentle with them, can you cut the clumps out, be very careful not to get too close to the skin and them use the dematting comb. Once the mats out taken care of make it a daily ritual to brush him/her with a soft bristle brush.

Hi Abbylover,
Call your vet. There are groomers for cats. Have the cat shaved. If the matts are bad thats the only thing you can do. My sister had a long haired cat and had her shaved every so often. It does help prevent fur balls. Ask the vet how often it should be done so you don't have matts.

there is also "pet ease" or "pet calm" that you can get that calms them so you may be able to do it at home - check with your vet the risks of feeding to an elderly cat beforehand - it is natural but be safe!!!!

there is also a spray you can put in when you comb to help get them put easier
