Hi, i have tried to give my lovebird a sunflower.
But it seems that its too big for him. Or sometimes, he breaks it, and doesnt eat the seed, but eats the other thing(forgot what its called... lol... its like the thing that protects the seed)...
Is it bad?? Should i remove them?

I saw in the pest store that they sell the entire sun flower head to feed birds so I imagine it is safe - maybe they only like a certain kind of sunflowers seeds - maybe smaller seeds I think are called oiled?

I have a peach faced lovebird, Zazu. I haven't had him/her for very long. But, he breaks up the sunflower seeds and nibbles on the husk(maybe it has salt on them or something), but he eventually eats the seed because its in his food dish. I feed him seed and I am currently trying to get him to eat Harrisons. So maybe your lovebird hasn't gotten to the eating the seed inside yet when you are watching him. But sunflower seeds are real fatty. I am taking them out gradually from his seed mix. I say just be patient. Maybe he will eventually eat it.

Drs. Foster & Smith carries the natural sunflower heads on their site.

I don't give mine sunflower seeds too often, due to the high fat content, but they do get unsalted ones as a treat every once in a while.;)

Mine loves them. I also dont let them have easy access to it b/c of their high fat content.
I give them as treats. Its the only time my birds come running to me: when they see it in my hands.

LOL.......Luther would be a junk food junkie if he had access to it. If I start a sentence with "how about......" he runs to me like he is being chased by a lion......lol. He can be in his happy hut, snoozin and come dashing out there like a crazy bird.........:D

lol. I used to make the mistake of grabbing a bunch of sunflower seeds to find the nicest looking ones to give to them, and leaving the rest on my bed.... I left the room for a bit, and came back to a guilty, but rather pudgey looking lovie helping himself to the seeds!
They're still seed junkie, as they rather throw out all the good stuff I give them and scream at me for hours and starve to death, then eat the goodies. However, it's been almost a year, and I still have't given up!
My macaw, on the other hand, reminds me of a dog...she'll eat ANYTHING I give her BUT barely touches her seeds. and it's hilarious, cause everytime I give her something "new" she entusiastically screams, "hmmmmm!!!" then ask me "is it good?!" lol
