My avain vet, bless her pet loving heart, has gone to help join in saving Katrina's devastated animals. I wanted to share them with all of you.
These are some of the birds that she located at Lamar Dixon Expo facility. Cages were stacked on top of each other on the dirt floor of horse stalls. So sad.

She offered to bring in a larger cage for this poor Green Wing Macaw, but was told all birds had to remain in the cages they came in. This upset her! All she was allowed to do was clean their cages and do exams. Look at the cages in the background.........they are just balancing on top of each other.

Pieces of paper, containing any information of the bird were placed on the cage. Some of those pages were shredded by the birds, making their location found impossible to read.

She is back. Here is a finch she brought back. This little thing was checking out when she got to it.

Getting to treat them was soooo hard. She burnt many hours filling out paperwork to just get transportation to the animals in dire need of treatment.

Wow -- I knew that there were many animals displaced by Katrina - but didn't really picture it in my mind. How awful. Is there any plan on trying to reunite these pets with their original owners or is that just an impossible hope?

It appears that there will be many animals not reclaimed. People are without homes, so their pet search will not take place until they are situated somewhere. Most of the birds are not to be removed from the shelters because they want to keep them close to where they have been found. This is their plan with hopes the owners may find them easier. Many need medical attention, better housing facilities, and round the clock care. Some of the pics here show where some birds have been placed in one of the ladies home. Still, this situation is not the best for them, but it is a lot better than sitting in a warehouse full of other type pets. The odor in some of the warehouses are not pleasant, so the birds have to get out of those situations ASAP due to their sensitive resparitory system. :(

Wow Magnum! That is so incredible of those people and I feel so sorry for those birds, cats, and dogs. If only the world had more people like those donating their time and efforts to saving these animals. Thanks for posting!

I just cry for those animals.... at least people can somewhat fend for themselves and have a voice... the animals are at our mercy :( . God bless your vet and the people unselfishly trying to help them. That is not a healthy environment for any of them, especially for the birds.... my heart is so broken...

What I don't get is why they put up such a fight to even let these people try to help. Why keep them from putting the poor birds in better suited cages? That poor Macaw is in a horribly small cage, and one was going to be provided.....FREE!!

Birds dont handle situations like this good at all...... how many will develope behavior problems, feather plucking, self mutilation and worse.........?. I think they need to get them into better cages, environments, etc..... worry about re-uniting later.... Im thinking its going to be awhile before the owners will have a place for themselves, let alone the pets.... Im seeing people on TV saying they will stay where they were evacuated to and not even going back. If it was me I'd be high-tailing it to get my pets.... how long has it been?.... or at least make arrangements for the animals. I'm willing to take a few of the larger birds for as long as it takes. They dont even have space to quarantine.... sickness will spread and how many will die or have to be euthanized....? :(

I know Jan.........it is very sad. My avian vet tried everything she could to get them to understand. I too would have been desperately searching for mine........I could not sleep one wink until I found them. :(
One of the places they fought to get transport to was a breeding flock of large parrots, including Macaws, that were left behind by a breeder. They were told there were at least 35 birds were still there, stranded. They had to be flown in by helicopter, but it took 3 days of fighting, they finally got there........all but 3 Macaws had eventually drown.
So, my avian vet decided to take a pic of the precious transportation, just sitting there for 3 days, fightless and empty.

I pray God is holding all those babies in his arms and they are at peace ..... and no longer having to deal with this hell on earth. I have to go find another box of tissue.......

How hearbreaking this whole situation is! I could never have pictured the number of animals displaced, but now I have an idea. Too bad this isn't even half of them. My heart is really breaking for that macaw, poor thing. And refusing any help, especially free, is terrible too.

makes me wonder why they can't find foster homes for these animals and keep good corresponding records should the original owners show back up for their pets. I would gladly foster a couple.
