(OK...I am a bird owner...but I love dogs too....I found this recipe in a cooking magazine and thought it was too irrestible not to post...here it is).....
1-1/4 cups shredded cheddar cheese
1/4 cup stick margarine, softened
1-1/2 cups whole wheat flour
1 to 4 garlic cloves, minced
Dash salt
6 to 8 tablespoons milk
In a mixing bowl, beat the cheese and margarine. Add the flour, garlic and salt; mix well. Add enough milk to for a stiff dough. Cover and refrigerate for 30 minutes.
Roll out dough to 1/4 inch thickness. Cut with a bone-shaped cookie cutter (or any small shape), place on an ungreased baking sheet. Bake at 375 degrees for 15 to 20 minutes or until edges are golden brown. Remove to wire racks. Biscuits will harden as they cool.
YIELD: 1-1/2 to 2 dozen (depending on cookie cutter size).
(This looks good enough for people to eat....so I thought it should be healthy for your dogs....I am going to make a batch for my sister's pooch, Jesse. They make a nice little doggie gift).
Good luck and enjoy.
P.S. Does anyone think these are good for larger birds, too?

Mrs. B, it seems like a recipe you could share with your pooch and everyone else! That way everyone will have garlic breath and it won't matter, LOL!

That recipe sounds so good! Thanks Roseanne.:) Our Thanksgiving is coming up soon (Oct. 13th) so I'll make sure to have all the ingredients for that recipe so I can give my dogs a great treat for Thanksgiving!
It's also a great idea to give to the doggies that come trick-or-treating on Halloween! :D

Dear madam,
Your recipe is no doubt an excellent one for the pet dogs and I might add that it is especially good for pets with problems of hypertension or related disorders. Adding a teaspoon of cod-liver oil or shark-liver oil will increase its good-cholesterol content. Since these oils are rich in Vitamin-D adding a crushed tablet of Calcium (non-flavored kind) will make it better for growing and deficit dogs.
This recipe is bound to be good for pets recovering from illness but do be careful with pets recovering or just recovered from digestive tract infections espcially Parvo-viral infection. Please do share such recipes with the petlovers community.
Sincerely,
Shibu.

What a great recipe.. and a wonderful suggestion with the cod liver and shark liver oils... I bet the dogs will love them. I'll have to wait to try it out until my dogs are feeling better... but I can whip a batch up for you Gail LOL. I really hope your tiel feels better soon.

Dr. S. Thanks for reviewing this recipe. Can you give us any advice on feeding our Parrots? Are you an Avian specialist also? There are several bird recipes posted under "feeding frenzy" forum, can you advice us on those?
It is so good to have you here.
Thank you.

That recipe for the garlic thingies sounds great, but there's one HUGE issue...garlic, like onions, is poison to dogs. Sure, small amounts likely won't kill them (God knows dogs can seem to get into anything and do just fine), but just the same, it should be avoided.
While onions and garlic have awesome health benefits for humans, for some reason that does not carry over to dogs. Please, everyone, don't give garlic or onions in any form to your dogs! I've had several veterinarians throw me this caution and last year I actually saw an article in a local newspaper with the same cautions.
I don't know why, but people don't seem to be as aware of the garlic/onion danger as they are of chocolate.
As far as healthy things for dogs? I always add in a little boiled hamburger and rice with my dog's food. Only enough to give her the taste but her weight stays down, and with the occasional egg and olive oil mixed in, her coat and skin are very healthy! :-)

As I was reading the recipe. I am not much for rolling things out, so I might add a couple of eggs and a bit of milk and oil, then shape it like biscotti and slice when out of the oil. I might also use some cornmeal/masa in place of the entire amount of whole wheat flour.
For a bird with weight issues, I would use avery lowfat cheese like parmesan or baby swiss, I bet you could even use TOFU instead, that would yield a high protien treat.

Our avian vet said that cheese is not good for your bird at all times... but it is okay in moderation. It bines them up or something like that.
