I am trying to make a website all about pionus parrots. I only have a white cap so if any of you can tell me about your pionus I would be greatly appreciative. Even if you have a white cap that is okay for me to hear about. I need more voices that aren't me. So any input about your pi's is a good thing.

hi birdy girl, this is laceybey, and i looked up pionous parrots in my parrot book, its a beautiful bird, they look similar to a amazon with big conure eyes, I didn't see a white cap, it happened to be a maximillian.

I would like to make a climbing tree for my Maxi Pionus.....he's a medium sized parrot a little smaller than an Amazon.

Do you have any suggestions or instructions you can share.......I'd appreciate it.

Thank you

P.S.......Birdygirl I will be responding to your survey soon...Just gathering my thoughts.

climbing trees are really easy all you need is a drill and drill bit(the right size) an old Cristmas tree stand some perches and a big log (none toxic) I'll try to get pictures of mine so that you can see it's a lot of work but it's also a lot of fun to watch your bird play on it when your done.

I've had a little bit of experience making a few too, and what I usually do is get a big branch, stick it in a PRETTY pot and fill it with quick-drying concrete. This works fairly well, except it can get heavy! A wider pot works best. Anyway, after that dries, I use hot glue (make sure it's non-toxic!) and glue on other branches to the main one, which I then wrap together over the glue with sisal rope. After the "skeleton" part is done, I have fun "decorating" it with toys, swings, ropes, etc. That's the great thing about home-made climbing trees- you can customize them for your birds!

....do you actually tie the branches individually to the main trunk and will the glue hold my fairly heavy Pionus....he weighs approx. 2.34 g. Thanks for the advice.

Hey what great ideas! Thanks everyone. My husband made a "t" stand by welding a t type stand on the bottom. Then we went to the store and bought the wooden perches. He started at the bottom and made little perches all the way up in a circle like stairs. We used hot glue, although Sunni likes to pick at it,it has never come off so far,and her toys are all over it .

Mrs. Birdy- I connect a few more large branches to the trunk horizontally with the hot glue (if there's small notches or branches on the main trunk, then those work well for helping support the other branches), though for larger birds nails or whatever would probably be the better idea. Hot glue is very strong, though. For my conures and budgies, it's worked with just the glue- as long as you tie the sisal rope tight around it. After I've connected the other large branches to the trunk, then I use those to support other branches which I glue onto them. Those branches can be connected vertically, horizontally, slanted, or however creative you want to be. Sorry this probably isn't making much sense! I don't have a camera, so can't get pictures...:( Another thing, if you're using branches from outdoors, sanding them a little makes them look prettier and gets any sharp points off, and if you bake them in the oven at about 200 degrees F., then it helps to disinfect them. One last, though very important, word of advice- make sure you have someone else handy ready to help you!
