View Full Version : Allowed on a plane??
Hi everyone! I have a question that I hope someone can answer for me!! I have a little 1 pound chihuahua and he's coming with me to Texas in a bit. Can I bring him on the plane with me as a carry-on....and just put the bag underneath the seat? I don't know if they have something underneath the plane that can store pets...but that doesn't seem very safe! He is my pride and joy...so please write back if u know any info about plane rules! thanks a bunch!!!!!

I haven't ever dealt with airlines and pets, but I do know that most airlines probably won't allow you to bring the animal on with you as a carry-on. They do in fact have pet carrier things down underneath.
*NOTE* This is just what I have heard and not factual information, just putting in my $0.02 ;-)
But it sounds about right to me.
Any other thoughts guys?

I fly quite a bit, and more than once I've seen people with 9 or 10 lb. doggies in those little mesh bags stored under the seat during the flight. I've also seen a few birds like that as well. I'm pretty sure that you only have to use the cabin below for the bigger dogs that won't fit underneath the seat, or if you have a really noisy animal or something like that. I usually only fly American Airlines, so I"m not sure what other airlines's rules are. The thing that they use to store pets underneath is fairly safe, though one time I did hear of the air conditioning not working down there and the pilot had to quickly land at the closest airport and I think a cat died. That's not very often though! Good luck, and like emroul said, stick around. :)
Hi thank you sooo much for your replies...i forgot to ask if it costs extra to bring a pet on a plane...thanks

Hi JJoy and welcome :)
My friend was just visiting from Ohio and she almost took a 6 lb Silky Terrier home with her on the plane.... but the owners decided to keep it. All airlines are different, my friend was flying on Delta and they said they only allowed 2 animals on the plane as carry-ons and you need to make a reservation to save a spot. The animal carriers fit underneath the seat in front of you. You will need an approved carrier and updated medical records. They must have had a rabies shot within 30 days of the flight date. Depending on the dog, you could also ask your vet about a mild sedative if the dog is nervous and barks alot. Call the airline and ask them what the requirements are. It was going to cost my friend $75.00 extra to take the dog. Hope this helps and good luck and good luck on your trip :)
