My budgie, Odie is a really great bird. But he doesn't seem to totally trust me yet. If I try to pick him up to get him out of his cage, he always runs away from me. Why is that? Did I do something wrong? he doesn't like to be picked up really and I don't know why. Does any1 hav any advise for me on how to get him to trust me better?

Hi. Here's a pretty good website with taming info. Just remember to take things slowly, speak softly, and let him get used to you at his pace.http://www.lisashea.com/petinfo/articles/bird_hand.html

Hi,
I have 2 lovebirds and 2 cockatiels. They are all tame now. The cockatiels tamed pretty quick. The lovebirds took about a year before they started coming to me. Maybe because I have 2, I don't know. My best advise is just be patient and loving, it is worth the wait. Talk sweet and pleasant to your bird. Offer lots of millet, and spend as much time as you can around your bird. In the long run it is worth the wait. Soon your little buddie will respond.

I'm having the same problem, but I've started to work on it. Because my parakeets LOVE millet, I have only been giving it to them when I have my hand in the cage. Basically, I hold one end of the millet spray (cut in half, so it's not so long) slightly above and in front of their favorite perch. This way, the can stand on the perch and eat the millet without having to strain and without having to get to close to my hand. Since this is the only time they get millet (but it's every day), I hope they will learn to see my hand as a good thing, not a bad one. I also talk softly and calmly to them the whole time.

Eventually I will work with smaller pieces and holding in a way where they have to step on my hand to eat it. Here's hoping anyway.

Thanks for the website Birdy! That has some great tips! I'll be using that often, I think. ^_^
