I have worked with the Iams company ( who makes Iams and Eukanuba dog and cat food ) for years, but have never reccommended their products wholeheartedly, because their ingredients are far from acceptable. Now I find the company revolting and plan to boycott all their products. I am hanging signs in our local pet stores and supermarkets. Please brace yourself before you read this. It's gravely disturbing. I am brought to tears.

Omgosh, I never realized who Iams is owned by... Proctor and Gamble. How can such a large, important company be so heartless? Apparently, they do testing on all sorts of critters. I am not just going to stand by and watch this happen. I am boycotting all of Proctor and Gamble's products.

Bonnie, I think the fact that a company is large and important gives it the power to also make it heartless. It's all about big business and it isn't pretty.
Here's more that isn't pretty that I get depressed over. I have mixed feelings about PETA. My heart tells me that their policies are true and good but here I am with leather shoes on and I sadly love my shoes. I also haven't been a vegetarian in years. I'm guilty of eating poor abused animals that have been raised solely for human consumption. I think that's pretty disgusting too.
Proctor and Gamble makes some pretty good products. Some of which I'm sure we use and don't even know that they're made at that company. I also think it isn't just Proctor and Gamble that are heartless. That if we boycotted everything we were against, we probably wouldn't be using a computer right now either.
What is my point? There's good and bad in everything. If you're depressed, you see only the bad. If you realize that you can only do what you can and most things are out of our hands, then hopefully we can get through another day.
Sending you a virtual hug

well, that does it! I will no longer buy this product for my animals to eat! I have faithfully bought this for years! This is sickening and I won't be a part of this any longer as a consumer! I have a message board with tons of pet lovers there (though it is not a pet message board I know these people will be interested to know this!) and I hope it is ok to post this link to my board. Thanks so much for the information, I had no idea this could be happening like this! OMG!
I am outraged!

About the big business thing. It all comes down to money. I heard this on T.V. one time. "Pay a man enough, and he will walk barefoot into hell." the same is true about women. The people who work for companies like that are paid enough to shut off their feelings.

So true Jason. I think money can, and does numb people. It wouldn't numb us though!

It certainly would not. There are some things that I cannot ignore.

Well, I certainly hope that PETA investigators turn over the reports and evidence to the proper authorities and something is done about it!. I dont buy IAMS or Eukanuba products ;)

It's disgusting to read about the Iam's company, and it's sad to think of the thousands of other companys, both pet and non-pet related, that treat animals equally bad through experimental testing and such, like make-up companies, food companies and others. Agg....I just got a bag of Iam's kitten food a week or so ago! But truthfully I bet most pet food company's do inhumane stuff that they wouldn't want anyone to know about. Even though PETA was trying to get the "no exotics" thing passed which made me upset, they really do accomplish some good. At the Border's book store near my house I was flipping through a book about what's really in dog food and other things like that, and it was really turning my stomach! I'll have to find out the name of it because it's very interesting.

There is absolutely no amount of money that would make it ok for me to work for a company that treats animals like that. It's a very sad thing. And it's even more sad that they can keep doing it without there being anyone that can stop it.

:( I have never bought any of the IAMS products and what a horrible story. Unfortunately, I can't even begin to imagine what other horror stories are out there that the "big guys" are a part of. I have to agree with Love Bird B though. There will always be a good and bad side of things. I could never work for a company knowing that they contribute to harming animals or nature, not even for the big bucks. My conscience means more to me than money. I found a list of P & G products and I have already noticed that I use...Crest, Febreze, Bounty, etc.

Thanks Jenwood for your thoughts and listing a few of P & G's products. Febreze can also be harmful to pets so we can well add that to the 'do not use' list. I love Bounty though. It picks up bird poop so well, LOL!

I remember reading some about using Febreze around animals, and I pray that this was not why I lost my beloved parrot last year. He seemed so healthy, then developed an infection. He died at the vet's. I still have a bottle, but I haven't used it in a long while. :(

That stuff made the news when it first came out for sale. It was making dogs sick. I will never use it.

Uuugh! Thank you for sharing that with us!
We have been feeding our dog that food for at least the first 5/6 years of his life. The kennel owners promoted that brand to all their buyers. Probably because they were getting it from the company for nothing.
Since we are Canadian, I thought it would be a good idea to check other products that were from here. In so doing , I settled with a brand called Nutro. Scout is now 11 and has been happy on this diet.
Does anyone have any insight on Nutro? I would really appreciate it.
As far as the Iams/Eukanuba goes, I will be sending that info on to the Kennel people we got our Britany from. I will also be informing all my pet owning friends! Thanks again!

From all I've heard, Nutro seems like a good food. I ran across an awesome brand of pet food the other day that I'd never heard of, and it's called "Halo: Purely for pets". Has anyone heard of it before? I picked up a brochure on it and am extremely impressed. They have a line of dog food, cat food, and bird seed/fruit/veggie mixes. Everything is made from human-grade ingredients, and there are no preservatives, by-products, fillers, dyes, or chemicals. Also, as much as possible of it is organic and it's homeade, so sounds pretty wonderful! The dog food contains chicken, carrots, squash, zucchini, celery, string beans, green pease, turkey, pasta, chicken liver, whole oats, barley, garlic, kelp, adn vitamins and minerals. The cat food contains the same things except for the barley, whole oats, and pasta. They also carry vitamin supplements and a supplment that is supposed to help with shedding, itching, dandruff, and help with dull coats. And then for all of us bird lovers, they have three sizes of seed mixes that seem great and they contain many different types of seeds, nuts, veggies, fruits, herbs, and other healthy stuff! The website isn't the best but it's www.halopets.com, and if anyone wants to write or call I have the address and phone #. Sorry this is so long, but I just thought I should help get the word out about this! (it sounds way better than IAMS ;-) )
