It's most likely normal, as my dog used to eat his own too. I know, disgusting! I would do your best to keep yoru dog from eating it as it probably can't be that healthy! lol If this comforts you though, some animals like rabbits regularly eat their own, so I really don't know. If you can call a vet and ask about it.

LOL. This is something that animals have done for years in nature. Sometimes it could mean the dog is lacking something. But for the most part they did this so pretaters could not get to them and kill them. This was a way to keep safe. This has been going on for millians of years. I know it is very gross.

I dont' know if this is a coincidence or not, but I just got the next BirdTalk issue today and there was an article about birds eating their poop! And it also mentioned how it's common in dogs and is probably because of vitamin deficiencies of some sort.

Hi Peggy,
Yes, it is quite normal for some dogs to eat their poop (just like everyone has said). Puppies mostly do this and most outgrow this when they reach adulthood. However, there are some who do not outgrow this behavior. My Lhasa Apso likes to eat other dogs poop as well and I talked to my vet about this before. He suggested that we watch her very carefully and not allow her to eat other dogs poop because she can get worms, parvo, and other parasites/disease this way.
I'm glad you caught your dog before she got a chance to eat it! We weren't so lucky. How we actually found out she was eating other dogs poop was because she used to come over to give us kisses and we could smell a very FOUL odor from her breath! Yep, you guessed it! That was totally gross! And I ran to the bathroom to brush MY teeth and wash my face!

MY DOG, RASCAL, ENJOYS WALLERING IN THE POOP. I DONT KNOW WHY HE DOES THIS HIS FAVORITE IS CAT POOP. HE DIVES INTO IT AND LAYS ON HIS SIDE IN IT AND GETS IT ALL OVER HIM LIKE HE IS TRYING TO MAKE HIMSELF SMELL BETTER (IMAGINE THAT) I GRAB HIM UP AND IMMEDIATLY THROW HIM INTO THE TUB FOR A BATH. DOES ANYONE KNOW WHY A DOG WOULD WANT TO DO SUCH A THING? BUT HE DOESNT EAT IT THANK GOD.:)

Hi Jillelaine and welcome to the board :)
My parents had a dog that loved to go out in the pasture and roll in cow patties.... eeeuuuwwww LOL. I guess its just something they like to do... hard to say why they do it.... just keep alot of doggie shampoo on hand LOL

I read somewhere (a long time ago) that some dogs do this because in the wild this is what dogs do. It has something to do with masking their scent. Although we have domesticated the dog over hundreds of years, their instincts sometimes still kick in.

Yes indeed, I knew a pooch that used to like to roll in anything in what we would consider stinky including garbage.

ever consider spraying any poop you see...or poop your dog might see with that bitter apple spray? some dogs actually like the spray (my dog loves the taste), if so, try tabasco. i have yet to hear of a dog that likes tabasco. it may take a while and it's a pain to sprinkle tabasco or spray all the poop, but after a while your dog will soon associate poop with an icky taste (ie the tabasco or bitter apple spray). make sure your dog doesn't not see you taint with the poop...she might associate you messing with the poop with it being ok for her to mess with the poop.
