Hello. I have two female dogs that are german shepard/basset hound mixes. My oldest one is 3 1/2 and my youngest one is 2. Well they are both in heat right now and my youngest one "humps" my older one quite often. I have seen her do this when she was younger when I first got her but I haven't seen her do it again until recently when they are both in heat. My pldest dog has had two litters of puppies before but my youngest one has never had puppies. My boyfriend thinks they are really wierd and says they are just like their momma. LOL! Anyway can anyone tell me why she may be doing this and should I be concerned?

Thanks,
Princess Alex

I've heard of pooches doing that to display dominance, as in wanting to be top alpha dog. It could also just be a natural outlet of being in heat. ?

Hello princessalex and welcome :)

B is right... they do this as a dominance thing. Females also do this when in heat.

Just curious, why haven't you spayed them?. You mentioned the older one has already had two litters. If you spay, it will dramatically reduce the "humping" thing and you wont have to worry about bringing more unwanted puppies into this world and the bloody mess. It also calms them down, keeps them at home and makes wonderful happy pets... just something to think about ;)
